NDP candidate reflects Halton riding by Michael Gregory Metroland West Media Group New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate Nik Spohr is back on the Halton riding ballot for the second consecutive election. As such, he is campaigning on promises to boost lagging infrastructure investment and tax relief for small businesses. The 27-year-old, who holds two masters degrees and currently works at Gordon Food Service, has built a strong resume ripe with political experience that positions him a viable choice for young Halton voters. "What makes me unique is that I'm offering generational change -- something fresh and new," Spohr said. "Right here, right now, given the changes that have happened in our community I believe I reflect the new Milton," he said. The NDP candidate said the Progressive Conservatives (PC) strategies are "outdated" when it comes to transit solutions and the Liberals are willing to "burden" taxpayers and municipal governments. "What we're offering is a way to expand transit and services without being unfair to the taxpayer, without being overly aggressive in how we treat people's wallets," said Spohr. Similar to other parties, the NDP supports twoway, all-day GO service through Milton but Spohr said the difference lies in how the party would intend to fund the expanded schedule. Recently, party Leader Andrew Horwath said the NDP would create a $29 billion fund dedicated to cover transit and transportation projects over the next 10 years. Another $250 million a year would go toward projects in the Golden Horseshoe. Spohr said the change to the funding model in Nik Spohr recent years, which now requires municipalities to carry 70 per cent of the transit operating budget, has made difficult work for cash-strapped local governments. "It's really squeezing municipalities in a way that makes accessible, affordable transit services very difficult to maintain and we're seeing this across the province," he said. Spohr said he's witnessed the "explosion of growth" in Halton first-hand and found the necessary investments in infrastructure haven't kept pace. Instead, gridlock and busy hospitals are putting a strain on young families moving into the area. "What we should be doing is be ahead of growth, not behind it," he said, adding the PC's plan to expand highways to ease congestion isn't sustainable long-term. In an effort to boost job creation, the NDP is proposing efficiencies that lower hydro rates, tie job creation to tax credits for businesses, and cut small business taxes by half a percentage point over the next three years. "This will ensure those who haven't really weathered the recession the best are given an opportunity to grow, to recover," Spohr said. Going into next month's election, the main issues for the NDP continue to be affordable living for Ontarians, job creation and government accountability. Spohr said one of the reasons the NDP lost confidence in the Liberals was because of their failure to implement a financial accountability office as promised last year. The party is also looking to reduce the size of Cabinet by one-third and introduce a new minister of savings and accountability. "This is one way, a non-partisan way, that accountability comes back to Queen's Park," Spohr said.
