Hamilton's Cardinal Newman scored two unanswered goals to edge the Hawks 2-1 in Wednesday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference AAAA qualifier. Veronica Bosco staked Loyola to a 1-0 lead but Newman tied it up on a free kick from 25 yards out to pull even before the half. Newman then scored the winner with 20 minutes remaining. Loyola's 6-0-2 record topped the Halton league, which has produced a top-four finisher at OFSAA in all but one of the last 11 years (including eight medallists and two champions). The Hawks had averaged 3.8 goals per game, but were limited to just one in each of their last two games. A win in either of those contests would have secured a spot in the OFSAA tournament. Instead, there will be no hometown representative when Oakville hosts the tournament, which begins next Thursday. Holy Trinity, the OFSAA champs in 2012 and a strong contender again this year, was upset by Iroquois Ridge in penalty kicks in the quarter-finals. Loyola then beat the Trailblazers 4-1 in the Halton semifinal. That gave the Hawks an opportunity to earn a direct berth in OFSAA by winning the Halton championship Monday. Although Loyola controlled the play for much of the game, Milton's Bishop Reding Royals held off a late Loyola onslaught for a 3-1 victory. Reding had the wind on their backs for the opening half and took full advantage, scoring twice. The Hawks still had their chances, though, with Mabel Pastrana and Isabella Borea earning glorious opportunities but unable to solve Reding keeper Amanda Ianniciello. Loyola had the wind in the second half but it didn't take long for the Royals to take it out of the Hawks' sails when Danielle Vis launched a 40-yard strike that found its way just under the bar to make it 3-0. The Hawks finally got a spark midway through the second half. Reding goalie Amanda Ianniciello stopped Sarah Nixon's initial shot but the three-year member of the Loyola senior team followed up and drilled the rebound into the back of the net. From that point on, Loyola launched a full-scale assault on the Reding net. The pressure resulted in several corner kicks, but the Hawks' best chances would come in the final minutes. Ianniciello turned away a point-blank shot by Pastrana and two minutes later Meghan Sharp fired a shot off the bar. OT's junior girls held off a determined Aquinas squad to win their final, avenging a loss to the Raiders in last year's championship game. The Red Devils were under siege in the final minutes until Kate Chalmers stole the ball and OT was able to run out the clock. "The last two minutes were probably the most exciting minutes I've witnessed in a junior game. Both sides were just exhausted," said Red Devils coach Brett Tomlinson. "Fortunately, we have a very strong bench and had dropped in some subs. Some fresh legs helped us." Stephanie Schooling scored OT's try in the first half, with Sydney Wade adding the convert that proved to be the difference. Aquinas cut the Red Devils' lead to 7-5 midway through the second half, but missed the subsequent convert. The junior girls' title is OT's first since 2010, but the school has not fielded a team every season. Raiders romp in boys' rugby A/AA final Jim Leonard, the first-year coach of the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders junior boys' rugby team, got his first taste of media attention after the Raiders completed an undefeated Halton high school championship season on Wednesday. The Oakville squad had just knocked off the Hayden Huskies, 57-17, for the A/AA championship at Sherwood Forest Park. Tentative when a reporter revealed a tape recorder and troubled that his picture might appear when a photographer approached, he was resigned to yielding to another tradition a winning coach must endure. Led by son Scott Leonard -- the Raiders' captain -- team members doused the coach with water after trophy presentations at midfield. The celebrations weren't unexpected, as Aquinas led 31-7 at the half on the way to a 40-point victory, which was pretty much the norm this year in an 8-0 run by the Raiders. Aquinas defeated the Huskies 44-12 during the regular season and advanced to Wednesday's championship game with a 4317 victory over Garth Webb in the semifinals last week. "All of our games were pretty one-sided," said a soaked, but more relaxed Leonard. "We have a few Ontario (provincial) players on the team along with some (Oakville rep) Crusaders. They just got it together this year." The Raiders' scoring summary Wednesday suggests the team has balance as well.
