We are working co-operatively with the Hamilton Police and other police agencies to commit any and all assistance and resources required to recover the handgun and other equipment." Crowell praised a Dundas resident for a quick call to the Hamilton Police that led to Tuesday's recovery of the stolen car. "We are depending on the public, like the resident who has already come forward, to assist us with the investigation," the chief said. According to Halton police, the missing car was located in a residential area of Dundas, a short distance from where it had been stolen. Investigators are reviewing the circumstances of the theft. It has yet to be determined how the vehicle was entered. The recovered vehicle showed no sign of having been forcibly entered. A spare set of keys was "We are very concerned about this theft. The Halton Police Professional Standards Bureau is conducting an internal investigation to ensure that all service policies and directives were followed. Crowell is awaiting a report on their findings. The officer whose car was stolen is a 22-year veteran detective constable assigned to an undercover position on a joint forces operation. He continues in that capacity. Halton Police communications officer Sgt. Peter Payne said the officer involved was in proper possession of the car, which is a pool vehicle, used at Halton police headquarters. "Detective vehicles are used in an ongoing capacity, very frequently, for investigations," he said. "This vehicle was on loan to the investigator." Payne said there are occasions when officers take police vehicles home, such as during an investigation or when regional traffic officers are on call. However, he refused to say whether the car was parked at the officer's residence or if it was involved in an investigation when it was stolen. He also declined to say where the officer lives or works. The Hamilton Police Service is leading the investigation into the theft. Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the handgun and other police equipment or the person(s) responsible for the theft is asked to contact the Hamilton Police Service, Division Three detective office at 905-546-3851, Halton Police at 905-634-1831, ext. 5129, or anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
