"Detective vehicles are used in an ongoing capacity, very frequently, for investigations," he said. "This vehicle was on loan to the investigator." Payne said there are occasions when officers take police vehicles home, such as during an investigation or when regional traffic officers are on call. However, he refused to say whether the car was parked at the officer's residence or if it was involved in an investigation when it was stolen. He also declined to say where the officer lives or works. The Hamilton Police Service is leading the investigation into the theft.
