New group hosts special preview to upcoming film festival by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 29 | Friday, June 13, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A desire to rejuvenate arts and culture in the Oakville community has sparked the creation of Oakville Festivals of Film and Art (OFFA). The newly-formed group, created by Oakville photographer Judah Fernandez and longtime Oakville resident Wendy Donnan, is putting on a lm festival in the fall with a special preview event June 21 to give residents a taste of what's to come. OFFA will screen The 100 Year Old Man Who Jumped Out of the Window and Disappeared at Encore Oakville Mews Cinemas on Speers Road. Show time is 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased by visiting http:// lm. ca. Donnan, the festival programming director, describes the lm as a black comedy that tells the story of a centenarian who decides it's never too late to start over. She said the 100-year-old man makes an escape his nursing home to relive some past memories. Residents are also invited to an exclusive wine-and-cheese event before the screening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and includes reserved seating for the 8:30 p.m. show. A do- nation will be made to The Women's Centre of Halton -- call 905-302-9017. Donnan said the lm preview will set the stage for the inaugural festival taking place at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Sept. 27 with a full day of programming beginning at noon. It has been named Rogues + Heroes based on submissions organizers have already received. Donnan explained how excited organizers are to present award-winning feature lms, documentaries, and short lms, including the World Festival premiere of Sex, Fame and Murder, which chronicles the quest for fame of accused killer Luka Rocco Magnotta. With Magnotta's trial scheduled to start on Sept. 8, she said it's tting that OFFA will be featuring the documentary by Hiltz Squared Media Group. The festival will also feature world premieres of animated short lms from the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Judah Fernandez Design at Sheridan College, as well as short lms from local producers. Screenings will be accompanied by discussions with lmmakers and actors from the lms. "Oakville is truly a creative and cultural hub, and we are thrilled to bring this festival to this unique community," she said. Donnan added she's hoping the festival will not only promote cultural and artistic diversity with the cinematic arts as a focal point, but also really engage the whole local arts community in discussion. OFFA is still accepting submissions to Rogues + Heroes. For more information, visit www.offa.ca. Men can enjoy spa treatments too Men who once shied away from spa treatments are now embracing them as a luxurious way to unwind and improve their appearance. Just like they do for their female customers, spas offer men a variety of services. * Facial: Facials are among the most popular spa services for men and women alike. A facial for men exfoliates the skin and provides a deep cleanse to reinvigorate skin that might need a boost. A male facial can reduce unsightly and often uncomfortable shaving bumps while producing a far smoother shave the next time. * Eyebrow treatment: Many men do not tend to their eyebrows, creating a bushy batch of hair above each eye. Untrimmed or poorly trimmed eyebrows are unsightly. * Manicure: Much like many men do not tend to their eyebrows, just as many, if not more, men ignore their hands. But spas offer manicures for men who want to clean up their hands so they don't appear so gruff at their next business meeting. * Pedicure: Men can also enjoy, and many greatly appreciate, a pedicure. A man's pedicure may include a calf and foot massage as rough spots on the feet are rubbed down and soothed away. A male pedicure may include an exfoliation of the lower legs, heels, arches, toes, foot pads, and even the tops of his feet. * Microdermabrasion treatment: A microdermabrasion employs tiny crystals to exfoliate a man's skin, removing ne lines and scars from previous skin problems, including acne. Men who routinely receive microdermabrasion treatment can expect their skin's appearance to continue improving, as the procedure promotes the growth of collage and elastin. * Massage: Perhaps the most enjoyable service offered to men at many spas is the massage. Spas offer various massage options for men, who should discuss any physical issues they have with spa staff, who should then be able to recommend a massage based on that discussion. Sports massages can address issues or soothe injuries that result from sports and exercise and might even prevent those issues from recurring. When visiting a spa for the rst time, men should know that they don't have to order all of the aforementioned services on the same trip.
