Keri Currie, who has lived on Wedgewood Drive for five years, said speeding has been an issue there since she arrived and noted there are residents who say the problem dates back at least two decades. "We (are near) four different schools. We have Oakville Trafalgar High School, Maple Grove Public School, E.J. James Public School and St. Vincent Elementary School and we have kids walking and biking on this road constantly to get to school," said Currie. "We have cars here going 80-120 kilometres per hour (km/h)." Currie, who is working to see speed bumps introduced because she fears for the safety of her two young children, pointed to a series of Town of Oakville traffic reports to illustrate the problem. One November 2011 report saw the Town monitor Wedgewood Drive for 24 hours. During that period, 824 vehicles were recorded driving along the street. According to the report, 356 of them exceeded Wedgewood's 50 km/h speed limit by between five and 10 km/h. Seven vehicles were travelling between 80-120 km/h in the 50 km/h zone. While Currie said the situation now is just as bad if not worse, others are not so sure. Ward 3 Town and Regional Councillor Keith Bird cited a recent blitz by Halton police, which only saw a handful of tickets issued on Wedgewood Drive. "It's not atypical from a police point of view," said Bird. "Maybe it was the wrong time or day, but I don't believe they've been able to really get a handle on the volume of speeding the residents say occurs there on a fairly regular basis." Bird said he does believe speeding is a problem on Wedgewood and noted Town staff would be asked to provide council with a new report on the issue. Town of Oakville Traffic Technologist Adam Bell acknowledged more recent studies of the area indicate the bulk of the traffic on the residential street is travelling about 10 km/h above the posted speed limit and said this is enough to warrant traffic calming measures.
