Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School played host to the Angels for Angel Hair 2014 event that also saw donors from St. John, St. Joan of Arc and St. Matthew elementary schools. Mother Teresa put on a similar event in 2010, which Oakville father of three Giuseppe Peritore said snowballed from involving only a few people to becoming a large event including six local schools. "We're doing it because we're giving a personal gift of ourselves to someone else," Peritore told the Oakville Beaver. It all began approximately eight years ago, when Peritore donated 10 inches of his hair to Trillium Health Centre after he was dared at work to grow it out long enough for a wig -- he spent nearly two years growing his hair out and shaved it for Angel Hair for Kids. The program is put on by the nonprofit, Mississauga-based A Child's Voice Foundation. It provides wigs and hair loss solutions to financiallydisadvantaged, Canadian children who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment. Peritore decided to grow his hair out again for the 2010 donation after his son Gaetano's Grade 1 teacher at the time, Annissa McClure, told him she wanted to do a similar thing -- he said he would support her in her endeavour. In October 2012, the 12-year-old daughter of a friend of Peritore's passed away after her fight with cancer. "During the visitation, I reflected and the next day, I decided to grow my hair one more time in (her) memory," Peritore said. The Oakville dad co-organized this year's event with Mother Teresa principal Michele Braida and vice-principal Yolanda Esposito. Peritore and his wife Rita donated 12 inches of hair, while their children Celestia, 10, and Anyssa, 5, also donated their hair to the cause yesterday -- their son Gaetano, 13, donated his hair at the 2010 event along with his sister Celestia. Ten local hairstylists gave their time to make the initial cuts on stage and then gave a finishing style to the donors afterwards at the event's Hair Salon of Hope. Peritore says it takes approximately 10-12 ponytails and costs close to $1,000 to make one wig prosthesis for a child, so organizers set this year's goal to make five wigs and raise $5,000. As of press deadline, the schools had raised close to $1,000. It is the brain that actually processes the sound that the ear receives. As we age, the filtering ability of the brain begins to diminish making it more difficult to hear in a background of noise and to understand when speech is spoken at a rapid rate or with an accent. Research at the University of Maryland has confirmed that seeing a person who is speaking helps the brain process words faster and more accurately. Three important strategies to assist people in hearing better are: Speak slower, speak clearly and face the listener. If you are having difficulty, book a hearing test. Hearing aids give your brain dramatic assistance in sorting out speech and makes listening less of a daily struggle. Book a hearing test and start the journey to better hearing.
