The Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre is hosting the Tesla Health Festival Saturday (July 12) from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. as part of a five-day TeslaMania exposition that takes place across the Greater Toronto Area and Niagara region from July 10-13. The event pays tribute to Serbian American inventor Nikola Tesla. While most people know Tesla for inventing alternating current electricity, few people realize he is also the father of "energy medicine." The festival at the 1086 Burnhamthorpe Rd. E. centre will feature a multimedia art exhibition about Tesla, his vision, inventions and life. There will be antique and modern Tesla electrotherapy healing machines, electrotherapy books, crystal radios, radionic machines, quartz crystal gem stones and Tesla souvenirs. A labyrinth created beside the centre is also being highlighted at the event. It was inspired after the ancient 11th century stone labyrinth found inside the Chartres Cathedral in France. Pilgrims would walk or crawl and follow the pattern while meditating for divine spiritual guidance and healing. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy a similar 45-minute, one-kilometre journey (each way) in the grass pastures. Meanwhile Magda Havas, an associate professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University, will speak to guests about her findings on the impact the environment has on one's health. "Tesla was extremely sensitive to the environment in his laboratory. It was filled with high-frequency and high-intensity electromagnetic waves, yet he lived to the ripe old age of 86 years," she said in a press release. "We need to pay attention to Nikola Tesla's lifestyle if we are to survive this inventor's technology. The therapeutic machines he created need to be revisited." The event is free, however, donations will be collected in support of the Women's College Hospital's Environmental Health Clinic, which has a 14-month waiting list for patients who have become ill from exposures to environmental contaminants that include chemicals as well as electrosmog. Oakville resident Gary Pearson is putting a comedic twist on a literary night. He's bringing together improv, sketch and TV comedians for Comics Reading Books at the Moonshine Café in Oakville tomorrow (Thursday) to read from their published or unpublished works. Show time is 8 p.m. Admission is $5. Pearson, who has written for shows that include Corner Gas, MadTV , This Hour Has 22 Minutes, The Ron James Show and That's So Weird, will be introducing his own new satiric comedy novel, Me and the Crack Mayor. He told the Oakville Beaver the piece of fiction was inspired by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who has been making headline after headline over the last year. Pearson, who has lived in Oakville for 13 years and is the winner of the Writer's Guild of Canada Award, The Canadian Comedy Award and the Canadian Screen Award, describes how he was trying to write a science fiction novel last fall, but kept being distracted by all of Ford's antics. "I kept feeling like I was interrupted by the Rob Ford story and at every turn there was a new development, a new tape or he would say something outrageous or he'd be caught doing something outrageous and I couldn't concentrate on anything, so I decided to write a take on that and just imagine what it would be like to work for a person like him," he said. The result is a story about a young speech writer working for an outrageous mayor, he describes.
