Swimming Severn for a Cure INJURED? I Can Help! by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, July 17, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com More than 20 swimmers across Ontario will be making waves for breast cancer research as they dive into the Severn River Saturday (July 19) for the 14th annual Swim for the Cure. Organized by Oakville resident Debbie Bang, who also takes part in the event, the swim has seen 128 individuals participate since its inception and raise more than $182,000 for cancer research. According to Canadian Cancer Society statistics, 62 women in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day. "The swim is about setting a goal and believing it is achievable. Our crew, supporters and the other swimmers make it possible for us to finish -- just like those journeying with breast cancer," Bang said. "This year, several young people will be swimming instead of watching or paddling beside a parent. Their willingness to take on such an endurance event is truly inspiring." The 12.8-kilometre (eight-mile) swim takes approximately 3.5-7 hours to complete -- some participants take on the challenge as part of a relay team. It begins at Severn River Swift Rapids Lock 43 and ends at Big Chute Lock 44. Severn River is approximately one and a half hours north of Toronto, off of Hwy. 400. Most swimmers are expected to arrive at Big Chute between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY UNLESS I GET YOU MONEY My team of experienced lawyers can help you with: · Car accidents · Slip and Falls · Disability Claims (Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, CPP) · Wrongful Dismissal OFFICES IN OAKVILLE AND TORONTO For a free consultation call: Oakville: 905.842.2022 or Toronto: 416.351.9222 email: sspadafora@slspc.ca Debbie Bang Bang has no shortage of reasons for organizing and participating in Swim for the Cure. Other than her love of swimming, she's also seen the devastation cancer can create. Her grandmother survived her struggle with breast cancer after a mastectomy, but a close aunt succumbed to her battle with the disease. "Seeing that scar (on her grandmother) had a pretty profound effect on me as a young person. It made a difference in the work I did and the knowledge I wanted to gain," said Bang, who is a nurse.
