C4 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 13, 2002 New women's shelter needs help Make new friends at Fundraising campaign is $ 500,000 short of goal A final fundraising push is needed for another Halton shel ter for abused women and children. Halton W omen's Place (HWP) recently held a ground breaking ceremony on the site of a new shelter in Milton to complement the emergency services provided by the exist ing facility in Burlington. The $3-million fundraising campaign for the 12.500-sq. ft. facility, which will service north Halton, is about " We turned away $500,000 shy of its goal. requests from 540 The new shelter will pro vide em ergency beds and women for residential enhanced program s for services." women and children who are · Cheryl Taylor in the midst o f fleeing domes tic violence. Safe accommodation is available seven days a week with 24-hour staff on-hand each day. Also available are emergency clothing, transportation, confidential counselling, meals, referrals to support services, child care, children's programming and a 24-hour crisis phone line. The shelter is being built on the site of the Allendale cam pus between the Milton seniors' centre and the police building. It is scheduled to open in October. Cheryl Taylor, development officer for Halton Women's Place and the capital campaign director, said the current old home used by HW P in Milton is too small. It can accommodate 14 beds while the new facility will have 20 beds and room for cribs and cots. In Halton in 2001 HWP provided residential services to 173 women and 204 children and counselled another 521 women through its outreach program. "However, we turned away requests from 540 women for residential services," Taylor said. On the fundraising side, Mattamy Homes is a major sponsor of the Milton project having guaranteed to hold the building costs at $1.5 million through donations and in-kind support from the company's suppliers and community part nerships. Halton Women's Place is funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, which allocated $ 1.5 million to the project last year. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation approved $485,000 for the shelter. Taylor said they are hoping for $300,000 from the II Rotary clubs in Halton for the Milton project. When the Burlington shelter was built in 1994 the seven existing Rotary clubs in Halton donated $500,000.
