The credit, they unanimously maintain, has to go to their devoted customers, who contin ued shopping despite barricades, heavy equipment and all manner of disruption. Now that most store owners are ensconced in their new spaces, their gratitude comes through loud and clear. "We have a very loyal clien tele. They've been faithful," says Oakville Cycle & Sports owner Noel Ashdown, who has been operating out o f Trafalgar Village for 22 years. "People are adapting to the changes quite well." According to Space Optical owner Nicky Pala, who said, when interviewed on Monday, that she started her business at Trafalgar Village exactly 19 years ago to the day, long-time clients were concerned at first about the changes but she assured them her business wasn't going anywhere. "I know we're going to be happy here," she said. "O f all the places in Oakville I wouldn't want to be anywhere else than Trafalgar Village." Fairhom e ow ner Janet Sachade actually moved her store from Speers Road in order to be part o f the Trafalgar Village family and to take advantage of increased traffic flow and more space. Now situ ated on Cross Avenue, Sachade said her business is well posi tioned to service customers from both north and downtown Oakville. Celebrity House o f Cigars owner Narendra Jogee. who has enjoyed 10 years at Trafalgar Village, said he loves his larger space, which features lots of nat ural light, cherry wood accents and a walk-in humidor. "This is the store 1 always intended," he said. "And I intend on going for another 10 years." Demolition work began last August and although the time since then has been hectic, the end has plainly justified the means. In fact, 18 of the 22 new stores were existing businesses. Phase One o f the project involved construction of a barri er through the middle o f the mall (from The Women's Club to the licensing office) followed by the demolition o f the western por tion o f the site. Home Depot, expected to open May 23, is being built in the northwest quadrant o f the site while two satellite buildings -- one approximately 14,400 sq. ft., the other 12,500 sq. ft. -- stand near Cross Avenue. The stores remained in the enclosed mall last Christmas before moving to their new loca tions in late February. Demolition of the rest of the mall began March 1. The most easterly portion of the site is being reconfigured from NoFrills to Golden Griddle (which will remain at their cur rent locations with facelifts to match the new facade of the mall) and will include a new 10,000 sq. ft. space for The Women's Club, set to re-open at the end o f March. "It's amazing how faithful the clientele of the long-time stores were," says Trafalgar Village manager Pat Sutcliffe, who has taken out prints ads thanking steadfast customers. "(The stores) have offered their services all along and so they persevered along with them." In addition to those business es mentioned above, the site will feature the following stores and services: Pets & More, Gino's Pizza, Driver & Vehicle License Office, FCS Computers. Flooring ca.com, Oakville Sewing Centre, Surroundings Gallery, M anning Jewellers, Verdi Hair Design. S&H Health Foods, Nail Queen, Extreme Pita, Dollar and Change. The latest renovation brings the shopping centre full-circle: when it opened in the early '60s, the site was an open air plaza. Years later it became an enclosed mall and now, 40 years since the original groundbreak ing, it's open once again to the sky. "Some of the long-term own ers have been through some lean times, so they deserve this," said Sutcliffe. 905-849-4342 o r visit o u r w ebsite at: w w w .hynekfinancial.com T h e T a x A d v is o r y Providing Income Tax Planning And Corporate And Personal Income Tax Preparation Services to Companies And Individuals Since 1962 "I h a v e n e v e r K n o w n A C o m p a n y O r A n In d iv id u a l W hose Taxes I C o u ld n 't R e d u c e E.L.
