A colourful traveling exhibition of 43 quilts is currently on view at Hopedale Presbyterian Church. This exhibit of quilts has been trav elling across Canada for the past two years and is now at Hopedale Presbyterian Church, 156 Third Line, to Sunday. Viewing hours are Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is $3. In 1999, the Celebrate Committee of the Presbyterian Church in Canada sponsored a quilting exhibit to honour the Millennium, the 125th anniversary of The Presbyterian Church in Canada, and the Jubilee Initiative. The exhibit is an ecumenical collab orative program that seeks to address injustice, poverty, enslavement, and environmental issues on a global scale. The quilts in the exhibit could be on any of these, or other themes associated with church life. The response was terrific. Entries poured in from British Columbia to Newfoundland. The quilts range from double bed size to small wall hangings and each one has its own story. There are several signature quilts. One of these was made in St. Paul's Church. Sault Ste. Marie, in the early 1930's. It was a fundraiser and each person donat ed 25 cents to have their name embroi dered on the quilt. The quilt disappeared and resurfaced in 1997, when it was purchased at a flea market for 50 cents CELEBRATE in a town about 100 miles away. Where it has been for the last 60 years or so remains a mystery. Some highlights in the exhibit at Hopedale Presbyterian Church include; From Sea to Sea is a beautiful large hanging portraying Canada from the mountains, across the forests, prairies, Canadian Shield, lowlands, to the mar itime coast and oceans, with the Celtic cross extended over all. Forgive Them For is an original art deco design that depicts the impact of pollution on our world, particularly in oceans. This one makes you think. Another quilt called Partners in Patchwork is based on a bible study, with various traditional squares illus trating bible verses. Oakville's entry in the show is a wall hanging, showing three interlocking cir cles spinning in space. The purple one represents the richness of history; the red one, our recent century of conflict: and the blue one, our hopes for the future. Over all flies the dove. `The Spirit Ever With Us.'
