The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 13, 2002 - D 3 Bantam AA's face Markham for OMHA title What a difference a year makes! The bantam AA O akville Rangers have defi nitely put their disappointing m inor bantam AA year behind them! W hereas the hockey season was finished for the m ajority o f this squad early last March, this rejuvenated team has certainly reinvented them selves to earn a berth in the Ontario Minor Hockey A ssociation (O M H A ) cham pionship finals! O ver the years there have been roster changes, but there are a still a few guys who have played together since their minor peewee AA year -- the last tim e that they took home the OMHA cham pionship trophy. As m ajor peewee AA's, the team was a final ist in the same series, narrowly missing the opportunity to continue on to the O H F's. On February 27, Oakville set the pace with a decisive 6-3 win over Milton. Following a shaky first period which gar nered Milton a two-goal lead, the Rangers took control o f the game, hammering in six goals. Corey Halyk led the way with two goals w hile single markers were contributed by Craig Shimoda, Kyle MacDonald, Jeff Nabeta and Daniel Ringwald. Earning assists were Kevin Sinclair (2), Mark Harris (2), Nabeta (2), Josh Johnson. Mark D vem echuk, Mark M clsaac and Halyk. Goalie Mike M ierzwa was solid in net. On March 1. on home ice, the M ilton team notched the first goal just seconds into the game. It w asn't until the second period, on a power play, that Mark Harris evened the score. D espite several scoring opportunities for Milton, the score rem ained tied at 1-1 until the floodgates opened in the third and the Rangers pocketed three unanswered goals for the 4-1 vic tory. Daniel Ringwald. Craig Shim oda and Corey Halyk also scored for the Rangers with assists by Kevin Sinclair (2), Jeff Nabeta (2), Shimoda, Stephen Ferguson and Josh Johnson. Goalie Conlan G assi's incredible saves were a major factor in this win. On March 6, in a feisty game punctuated by penalties, Oakville enjoyed a two-goal lead and a potential shutout until the last three minutes o f the third period. Knowing that they were in a do-or-die situa tion, Milton pulled out all the stops to even the score and were successful in sending the game into a ten-minute overtime. For the second tim e this season, Mark M clsaac notched an overtim e winning goal, assisted by Jeff Nabeta and Corey HalykAlso scoring for the Rangers were Tyler Wood and defencem an Daniel Ringwald. Assists were contributed by M clsaac, Stephen Ferguson, N abeta and Mark Harris. Goalie Mike M ierzwa frustrated the Milton shooters for the majority o f the gam e as did Ranger defencem en Mark D vem echuk. Stephen Ferguson. M ark Irish, M ario M ancuso. Ryan Mant and Daniel Ringwald. The bantam AA team will be facing Markham in the OM HA cham pionship series. York Simcoe is next highest ranked O M H A team in province in 10th place (Continued from page D2) Wren and McMurrich each net shutouts in OMHA series "Wow"! That was coach Roy Gringmuth's word for his minor bantam AA's after they moved ahead 2-0 in their best-of-five O ntario M inor Hockey Association (OMHA) semifinal series with the Chatham Cyclones, after their 1-0 overtime win Sunday afternoon at Oakville Arena. James Albrecht scored the win ning goal at the six minute mark of sudden-death extra time, assist ed by Carson Jenkins. Coming through big time with the shutout was Oakville goalie Oliver Wren. O akville opened the series Saturday, with a 2-0 win, despite being out-shot 38-24, with Mike M cM urrich shutting down the high flying Chatham team. Michael Maganja opened the scoring with assists to Shane Jackman and Cory Martin. Derrick Westroh put the capper on the game with a late goal, with assists to Jackman and Albrecht. Adding significant drama to the game was the AA's playing twomen short in the dying minutes of the game. A win in this series with Chatham will put the AA's in the OMHA finals against either Ajax or Aurora. The AA's finished first in their league (22-4-2) and are made up o f seven returnees from the 2000/01 team, six from the single A's and three from the AAA's. In earlier OMHA playdowns. they moved past Burlington (three shut-outs), and St. Catharines in four games. "These are just a great bunch o f guys to coach," said Gringmuth. "They just love to play hockey". the final since they play them in their own south central loop, and that's Halton Hills and the winner of today's (Wednesday) one-game playoff showdown between Niagara Falls and St. Catharines. "Halton Hills upset Niagara Falls, and Niagara Falls is a good hockey team so they must be playing well. They're either doing something right or they had a very good week," said coach McKenzie. The Rangers have not played the other two teams this year -- York Simcoe and Quinte. They've hooked up with York Simcoe in the past but McKenzie has not coached against Quinte in the six years he's been at the helm. But both are first place teams who prevailed in their own playoffs. York Simcoe is the next highest ranked OMHA team in Ontario, behind Oakville, in 10th spot. McKenzie said his own team's trump card is probably the speed and depth o f the offence. "We're a strong offensive team. We're a fast skating team. We probably don't have one game breaker. We probably have three, four or five game breakers. "We have three solid lines. We don't have one line. One line will come up big in one game and it will be a different line in the next game. And then the other line will come up big in the third game. "I think it would probably be very difficult to coach against -- trying to match offensive talent -- because we are fairly skilled up front, and our speed. "We're a fast skating hockey team. And probably the most competitive team in our league. They just seem to find a way to make things go their way." This exciting playoff hockey action is all free at River Oaks Rec Centre. Ax complete schedule is included, here, but if you want to watch the Rangers, they play Friday 11 a.m. (vs Halton Hills) and 3:20 p.m. (vs Niagara Falls or St. Catharines). Here's a run down. (Oakville 6, Burlington 0 - Feb. 24) Michael Ulozas scored a hat trick with the 1st. 5th and 6th goals o f the game. Ryan Adams, Mark Luzar and Patrick Megannety each scored, as well, giving Oakville a final 60 triumph. Patrick Megannety, Michael Wood and Alex Laram ee provided assists. Ali Binnington was steadfast in net, making great use o f her new glove, denying Burlington any recourse in the game. (Burlington 2, Oakville 1 - Feb. 26) As expected Burlington bounced back strong. They scored the winning goal with 3:51 left in the game, despite a gritty effort from Oakville, including Nick Dalby in net. Patrick Megannety scored O akville's only goal, assisted by Mark Luzar. (Oakville 1. Burlington 0 OT - March 2) Ali Binnington put on a stellar display in net, securing her second shut out of the series. The AA's exhibited fierce determination, even killing a 2-man disadvantage for 1:15 in the second period. The game ended scoreless, forcing it into overtime. Patrick Megannety picked up a pass from Michael Wood just two minutes into overtime and finally managed to get one past the Burlington goaltender. (Burlington 4. Oakville 2 - March 5) Oakville didn't quite show the same team effort, and it ended up costing them the game. Ryan Adams scored both the Oakville mark ers, one assisted by Ben Fanelli, the other by Tim Haley. (Oakville 2, Burlington 0 - March 10) Prior to the game on March 10th, Ali Binnington was heard to say that she wasn't ready to give up her shutout streak just yet. Well, her teammates must have heard her, and they stepped up to help her earn her third shutout of the series. Once again, Burlington and Oakville struggled end to end. These two well matched teams both gave it everything they had. Finally, well into the 2nd period Michael Ulozas took a pass from Mark Luzar and scored the first marker o f the game. Ali Binnington made some astounding saves to hold on to the one-goal lead. Then six minutes into the third period, Ryan Adams provided some welcome breathing room on a pass from Patrick Megannety. Aggressive forechecking, solid defence and excellent passing were the deciding fac-' tors in securing the series winning game for Oakville.
