The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 13, 2002 - A 5 More families seeking help at food bank By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Fareshare Foodbank's annual Easter Food Drive runs for two weeks starting Saturday, March 23 and this year the need for donations is more acute than it's been for several years. According to spokesperson Dudley Clarke, in recent months the foodbank has experienced a 15 per cent increase in the number of fam ilies availing themselves of its services. At first Clarke thought the spike might be an aberration, but that has not been the case. 'T h e numbers started to jump last November and they stayed up," he said. "February was the highest in the last cou ple of years." Last month 257 families used Fareshare as opposed to 215 families at the same time a year ago. This represents 936 people (671 in 2001), 531 of whom (365 in 2001) were children. "What was also alarming in February is that 32 new Swim club waits for solution (Continued from page 1) dig it up and start o ver." The pool is also designed to accom m odate swim classes and leisure sw im m ing, which operate best with shallow water, explained M cFarland. So, the pool is deepest (1.25 m etres) at the entry end. It then evens o ff to a shallow er depth (1 metre) through m uch o f its m id section. but becom es deep enough (1.07 m etre) at its opposite end to accom m o date the turns involved in com petitive sw im m ing. M cFarland said the accidents "cau sed us to take a longer, harder look at what we have there and if there's anything we can or should do to ensure such incidents w on't o ccu r in future." The parks director said the Town is still in what he ca lls "the fact finding stag e." A ccording to M cFarland, the "two most logical" rem edies may be to raise pool w ater levels or excavate the pool to make it deeper. M cFarland said, at this point, he's unable to put a price tag on either option. A m eeting o f town offi cials, the architect, general co n tractor and the OAC was held recently. A fter the injuries occurred, the Town rem oved the startin g blocks from the p ool's deepest end and a sign there reads " No D eep D iving." "No Diving" signs are up on the pool's rem aining three sid es, saia McFarland. A report is also being done on what may norm al ly be expected when a swim m er dives into a pool during a com petition. The day the one woman was injured during a swim meet, M cFarland said 400 com petito rs ex ecuted approxim ately 1.500 dives. Still, he added, one injury is one too many. The pool is still open for business. Last month there was a 36-h o u r closure because a m alfunctioning filter caused some cloudy water, but M cFarland said that was separate from the families came in for the first information call 847-3988. The unfortunate rise in the jams, cookies, canned salmon, number of children has also instant coffee, hot chocolate, placed an additional financial powdered milk and sugar. The donations can be burden on the foodbank. Clarke explained that in order dropped off at Fareshare, to provide youngsters with located at 1240 Speers Rd.. fresh fruit, vegetables and Unit 6, every day of the food milk, Fareshare gives their drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. parents a $10 voucher each Oakville's seven fire stations month, redeemable at grocery and the town's two Loblaws stores are also accepting dona stores.
