R C H R YS L E R · DO DG E · JEEP 2388 M D t , 90W45-7S~S Ridge edges Q.E. Park for Halton championship By Norm Nelson BEA V ER SP O R T S EDITOR If it's true that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame, then Lee Bekker, still has five minutes left, having used up only 10 minutes. Bekker scored the winning goal for Iroquois Ridge in their 2-1 victory over Q.E. Park in Monday's all-Oakville Halton senior boys soccer championship. "He (Bekker) had actually come to the side line and asked me to put him up front just for 10 minutes because we needed some extra punch up there," said Ridge coach Matt Love. "So that is what we did and it worked for us which is nice." Iroquois Ridge now moves on to Friday's Golden H orseshoe A thletic Conference (GHAC) final, which could very well be against Q.E. Park again. But first, Q.E. Park would have to beat Hamilton Roman Catholic champion Bishop Ryan in today's (W ednesday's) G-HAC qualifier in Hamilton. "It was a pretty close game -- they (Q.E. Park) played pretty good," said Bekker, whose excitement was somewhat muted after the game because of a red card which will keep him out of Friday's crucial G-HAC championship. The win ner advances to the Ontario Federation of School A thletic A ssociations (OFSAA) provincial championship. M onday's Halton championship was close, as one would expect. After all, their league game was tied 1-1 with Q .E.Park actually winning a tournam ent encounter 3-1. But Q.E. Park coach Jeff Shanks quickly added that it was "awfully windy that day so I really wouldn't hold a lot stock in that (tourney victory)." Added Ridge coach Matt Love: "And should we meet again this season (i.e, in Friday's GHAC championship). I'm quite sure the outcome will be fairly similar. They're both good teams." Q.E. Park's strength, he said, is their midfield. "They've got a very good midfield unit that moves the ball around well. So it makes for a good contest because w e're quite organized. We've got speed in the right places and some tenacity." Coach Love felt his team bent a little but didQ.E. "I think in the second half, once we tried to bring it home, 1-0, we fell down a little bit in midfield and they (Q.E. Park) got the momen tum." Besides Lee Bekker with the winning goal, he noted some other players that he thought came to the fore in the Halton championship game. "Adam Craig, who played centre defence for us, had another sound game, as did young Nick Merony in net. A Grade 9 student, he plays very well. "Matt Curtis is just getting over some injuries so that was nice to have him back on the flank with that blazing speed going down there. "We've got a couple of quiet guys on the team who work real hard. One is Russell Palmer, wide left defence, and the other is Sean Freihaut. I actually play him as a fifth midfielder in front of centre defence. "I thought they all had very good games today." And, of course, there was Brention Barkman who opened the scoring. "H e's very quick, very strong and he has a lot of pace, and he put away a nice first goal." Coach Love said his team will be ready for whoever wins today's G-HAC qualifier. "If they (his players) want to get to OFSAA then they have to deal with whoever they play." Q.E. Park coach Jim Shanks thought his team came to life after a poor start. "I think we played fairly poorly the first half. We were sitting back, we gave them too much space. "I think the second half, we started to turn things around a little bit and we were marking them a little bit closer and as a result it caused them to turn the ball over a little bit more. "I thought we had our opportunities, we had our chances to score. A couple of times we were in alone on the goalie. We just put them wide." The Q.E. Park goal that did go in, came from an unexpected source. "(Filip) Prostran hurt his ankle in the Assumption game and I was sort of surprised he even played today. "He didn't play the whole game; he was in there at the right time." He also singled out Ryan Tuske. "He marked their really fast forward. So that's pretty incredible considering he's only in Grade 9. "Our goalie came up with some good saves, as did theirs. "I think we played a strong game."
