There w asn't much between them during the season and there w asn't m uch betw een them in the allO akville Halton ju n io r boys soccer cham pionship won by Aquinas 3-2 over Loyola Monday at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington. Scoring for the victors were A quinas R aiders captain Gary B enendes, John M ark Ssennyonjo and Jason Silveira. Paul Ferri had both goals for Loyola in a losing cause. The teams were tied at 2-2 at the half and Aquinas managed the only A quinas captain G ary Benendes (left) goes up ag ainst an unidentified Loyola player in the H alton final. Peter McCusker · Oakville Beaver goal o f the second half. Aquinas opened the scoring early, and it stayed that way until a verita ble goal explosion late in the half with three lightning quick goals, first by L oyola to tie it up, then by Aquinas to regain the lead and then by Loyola to tie it again at 2-2. The tw o team s were also neck and neck during the regular season, shar ing identical 7-1 records. Loyola had actually won the reg u lar season encounter 2-1. "Very close gam e," said an elated A quinas Raiders coach Tim Bailly, follow ing the game. "I knew that one goal was going to decide it. "We knew playing against these guys in the final game o f the season that they were very good and we knew it was going to come down to one goal. "We were a little behind in the first half, but they cam e through in the second half and they pulled it off. He declined to centre out any player in particular. "The whole team came through. The guys were focused. They knew what they had to do. And everyone played their role, and they dug down deep." It capped off a banner year. "They played their hearts out in the games. In particular our captain Gary Benendes." Benendes termed it an "intriguing gam e." "It was pretty heated. We were both 7-1 (regular season records) and we ju st played our hearts out and we won. They beat us 2-1 last time, and we won 3-2 this tim e." "Last game it was really wet, it was physical and we lost a tough one. They popped tw o in after we scored. We were winning, they took the lead. We got overconfident." There wasn't much to say after the game for Loyola head man Mark Commisso. "See-saw battle, but som eone's got to win the gam e," he said, shrug ging his shoulders. "Their goalkeeping w as exceptional, they had a strong team. "It's unfortunate the way the out come o f the gam e turned out, but I think we put forth a good effort, that's all we can ask the guys to do." Indeed, although A quinas outchanced Loyola in the second half, Loyola did have their own gold en opportunity to go ahead in the second half, ju st m issing a gaping net. "You take your crack at it, and if it goes in, it goes in. You can't really look back," said coach Commisso. "But it was a strong showing, a good game, a good match. Both sides played w ell."
