Find a New Beetle with the Turbo S signature glued to the hind-quarters and you're in for a feverish amount o f power and poise that's just itching to tempt your line o f credit, not to mention your right foot. It turns this cute, stylish and fun little car into a cute, styl ish, fun and quick little car. With great rejoicing and fanfare, the New Beetle made its long-awaited debut in 1998. At the time, there was just a single version, available in two levels of trim and with a one-sizefits-all powerplant. Five model-years down the road and Volkswagen's retromobile has turned into a ver itable cottage industry of performance choices, all of the four-cylinder variety. They include the original 115-horsepower 2.0-litre SOHC base unit, a frugal 90-horsepow er 1.9-litre SOHC turbodiesel and a 1.8-litre five-valve-percylinder DOHC tu r bocharged engine for buyers seeking a few more thrills. Heading off this parade of power is the latest addi tion to the New Beetle sta ble, the Turbo S. It promises an abundance of trick stuff to separate it from the more run-of-the-mill relations.
