The Oakville Hornets peewee A rep team, this past weekend, capped off an undefeated weekend at the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championships in Mississauga with two nailbiting, dou ble overtime wins on Sunday. The Hornets won their semifinal game 4-3 in double overtime over Belleville and then won the Ontario championship game 2-1, also in double overtime, over Vaughan. "A total o f six games this weekend, starting on Friday, two games a day, and we didn't lose a game," said a still hoarse head coach. Bill Metcalfe. "And there was some really tough competition in there, too." "We had a lot o f Oakville people there, we had all the executive there, we had lots of friends and family. Ferguson and Eusepi both score key double overtime goals The Oakville Hornets peewee A rep girls hockey team captured the gold medal for Oakville at the O ntario W omen's Hockey Association (OW HA) provincial championships this past weekend at the Brampton Entertainment Centre. The Hornets capped an am az ing six-game undefeated streak (including five straight wins) with a thrilling 2-1 double over time victory over Vaughan in the provincial championship game. The march to the title began Friday with a scoreless draw against North M etro G irls Hockey League (NM GHL) cham pions, A urora. A ndrea H ornets goaltenders A ndrea M cLaughlin and C harlotte C apaldo com bined fo r three shutouts in six gam es at the provincial cham pionships. M cLaughlin posted the shutout to preserve the tie. Next up on Friday night was a 4-2 win over C hatham . Liz Edmunds was the sparkplug with two goals and one assist. Other goal scorers were Stephanie Secord and Taylor M etcalfe. A ssists went to N atalie Oreskovich (2). Tenille Clarke, Sarah Grigor, Allison W right, Brittany C ourt and Ryan Ferguson. The win sealed up first place in their pool and a berth in the quarterfinals. Also scoring in the victory was Taylor M etcalfe and Roxanne Johnson. Assists went to Ryan Ferguson (2), Stephanie Secord and Kate Wheeler. In Saturday night's quarterfi nal, the shutout string continued, with Charlotte Capaldo perfect between the pipes in a 2-0 win over Niagara Falls. Stephanie Secord posted both goals, giving her three goals in four games. Assists went to linemates Allison Wright (2) and Sarah Grigor. Sunday's semifinal game was decided in double overtime on a beautiful goal by Ryan Ferguson for a 4-3 win over Belleville. Late in the fifth period, Liz Edmunds won an important faceoff in the Belleville zone, allow ing Taylor M etcalfe to feed a perfect pass to Ferguson, who fired a quick wrist shot high to the glove side past the goaltender to cap the victory. Rounding out the scoring was Allison W right (lg , la), Sarah G rigor (lg , la), Carly Eusepi (lg ) and Stephanie Secord (2a). The Hornets were forced into their second consecutive double overtime contest o f the day in the gold medal game, and again they prevailed, this time 2-1 over a very tough team from Vaughan. The teams traded goals in reg ulation with Taylor Metcalfe get ting her third o f the tournament on assists from Roxanne Johnson and Kate Wheeler. Early in the fifth period of sudden-death play, team captain Carly Eusepi took a nice drop pass from Stephanie Secord, and blasted a hard wrist shot that eluded the Vaughan goalie, securing the thrilling 2-1 victory.
