"He was the only person I could think of." said Clayton. whose essay titled The Good Side o f Bad: Osama Bin Laden won him a $2,500 first prize in A&E Network's Biography of the Year Essay Contest. "1 was absolutely surprised to win." said the 15-year-old Grade 10 student at Iroquois Ridge High School. He's the winner in the Grade 9 to 12 category. The contest entry began as an essay assignment. Out of 52 essays collected by humanities teachers Nick Brune and Darlene White, about a dozen were edit ed, re-written and entered by the students who were mentored by both teachers for this contest. For encouraging students to participate in the contest, Iroquois Ridge High School received SI.000, a television set, VCR and collection of A&E videos. The A&E Network describes Clayton's entry as "one of the most ironic essays submitted." His was chosen from among 1,500 submissions in his grade category. Clayton explained in his essay how the terrorist's brutal attacks on the United States have brought about actions of brother ly love. "It takes a hairy caterpillar to make a butterfly, and likewise, it takes a disaster to create peace." begins Clayton's essay. "The excellence and range of essays submitted from students across the country were astound ing," said Shelley Blaine Goodman, vice-president of A&E Canada. "Clayton's essay was particu larly poignant in light of the trag ic events of Sept. 11 Moved by the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Clayton said "it made me realize how precious all those lives are. and to see how short life can be for some people." He intends to use some of his money to buy a new computer. "1 like writing," he concluded. Peter C. SPECIAL T O T H E BEAVER It takes a hairy caterpillar to make a butter fly, and likewise, it takes a disaster to create peace. Although unlike the butterfly, disasters don't simply fly away. Osama Bin Laden not only caused the further unity of this nation, but also promoted the idea of peace within us. He's bitten the population of Canada, left a large welt, and has infected everyone with the need to connect with somebody else, anybody else. We even find ourselves chatting to telemarketers to find out how they are, and if they have been all right since the attack. Within Canada, all citizens seem to have used Bin Laden as a good excuse not to fight, argue, and harm each other. It seems that after September l lth. strangers are showing each other brotherly love. People are taking the time to recognize that the person next door is a human being. Instead of inappropriate gestures towards our fellow humans, we accept them, and likewise are accepted. Millions of Canadians have rushed to donate blood for those who need it, not to mention memorial after memorial of those who lost their lives. It seems that recently our list of priorities has been jumbled, quite possibly, and hopefully for good. To look at these facts is to come to a strong conclusion: as long as the citizens of Canada continue to show their love for one another, we can never be defeated. Our unity and strength is a beautiful butterfly that will not be squashed anytime soon. I Lost 73 lbs. in 19 Weeks! Lost 73 lb s ., 70 Quote: " I finally found the solution to my weight loss problem.
