In Iroquoian tradition, the maple tree is seen as the `leader tree,' as it is the first tree to give the people a gift in the new season. Celebrate the gifts of the maple tree on March 17 at Crawford Lake from 10 aim. - 4 p.m. This year, join special First Nations guest presenter Yvonne Thomas as she shares some of the traditions of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people. Sweet Water cel ebrations have long been part of Haudenosaunee cul ture. March Break. March 9 to 16, is Sweet Water Season at Crawford Lake, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. See native style maple demonstrations in the reconstructed Iroquoian Village. Join staff in the village for maple symp demonstra tions that include traditional Iruquoian sap collection and boiling methods, a First Nations legend and a tasty sample of combread dripping with fresh maple syrup. Visitors can explore the Iroquoian village and recon structed longhouse from 10 am . - 4 p.m. After visiting the village take a guided hike through the Crawford Lake forest and learn about the maple tree and the other plants and animals that live at the park. Kids young and old can also enjoy free craftmaking and a discovery hunt on Sweet Water Day. Finally, if you need to warm up head to the visitor's center to try a cup of nature's tea. or enjoy a video presentation in the auditorium. The maple celebration does not have to end when you lave Crawford Lake. Stop by out gift shop for a snack, or an exciting First Nations nature or maple item. Once you've visited the baby farm animals, the elk herd, bison herd and the birds of prey, take your parents to Mapletowne for a tour of the sugar bush, tap a tree, visit an operational sugar bush evaporator and candy making house to sample some tasty maple candy. Then, hop aboard the horsedrawn SugarBush Express that takes people on a leisurely ride to a remote upper sugar bush and back for only $1 per person. There's no need to pack a picnic for this outing. . Mapletowne staff will be cook ing fluffy pancakes and sausages smothered in fresh maple syrup all day long. They've also been baking up a storm -- so there will be muffins, tarts and many other maple treats to enjoy. The tables are always warm and dry under the pancake pavilion nes tled in the middle of Mapletowne's sugar bush. Mapletowne is open to the pub lic weekends until April 14, and daily during March Break, March 9 -17. from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Admission during Maple Syrup season is $5 for adults and $3.50 for children five to 14; preschoolers are free when they bring their parents.
