A 4 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 6, 2002 G A TIN E A U P A R I S Children to benefit from $237,000 donation By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER About 10,000 unborn, newborn and pre-school children in Oakville are about to reap the benefits of a $237,000 cash infusion from the province. Nine community programs, which help parents, infants and young children in var ious ways, will receive financial boosts this month, courtesy of the Ontario Early Years Challenge Fund. The money will be distributed over three years. Minister Responsible for Children John Baird made the funding announce ment Monday at the Oakville YMCA on Rebecca Street. Most of the programs are expected to be available in April and are enhancements of existing programs already offered by various established agencies including the YMCA. "The power of Early Years is that it has the potential to ensure zero to six-year-olds get the best start possible," said Baird. Locally the Y has paired up with sever al other agencies to create the YMCA of Oakville Early Years Community Project The partnership includes the Region of Halton, Halton Children's Aid Society and Children's Assessment and Treatment Centre. According Halton's Director of Children's Services Mary Beth Jonz, the cash and community co-operation "helps meet the vision we always have had for children in Halton, come closer to its mark." The programs to be offered through the YMCA of Oakville Early Years Community Project are: -- Nobody's Perfect: A six-session program for parents of children up to age five which attempts to build confidence in their caregiving abilities through group 4 . "It's a natural partnership with the YMCA," said Rotary President John Kubacki. "The Y does such great work in the community, especially for youth." Early Years is a province-wide initia tive aimed at supporting programs that stimulate and nurture young bodies and minds -- as well as their parents' skills -- to better prepare children for school. -3< s> < cr-» ' r"<gy- F & A B O C D E Y $2 5 o f f any purchase over $100 of Gatineau products, just mention this ad. s P A Enter our lucky draw to win a Gift Basket worth over $400 of Gatineau products, plus a complimentary "Health Day at the Spa".
