The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 3, 2002 - D3 MOHA rep V /P praises Oakville Rangers bantam AAA's for `incredible run' Keith Murray, vice president of town rep and head coach of the M inor Oaks Hockey Association (M O H A ), praised the O akville Rangers bantam A A A rep team for their out standing contribution to Oakville hockey. " What an incredible run," said Murray. "Five Ontario Minor Hockey Association (O M H A ) golds, two silvers, one bronze and now -- with this O H L Bantam Cup silver (medal) -- two O H F silvers. " It has truly been an unbelievable ride. " I can't tell you how many people over the course of this week had wonderful things to say about this team and the Rangers organization. "W h ile I 'm disappointed the team was defeated by the Red Wings, I'm sadder that this wonderful group of players and coaches has played their last game together. I 'm going to miss this team." "It certainly proves the point that you don't have to leave Oakville or the O M H A to Find great hockey. There was talk that the South Central Triple A league was the weakest loop, but now everybody knows that isn't true." Murray acknowledged the unfailing dedica tion of coach Scott McKenzie who handled the reigns the past six years. W hile he could proba bly move to junior. McKenzie chuckled that next season he'll be "watching hockey." " Scott has done an incredible job. and when I talk to hockey people it always comes up. He has so much respect from those in the coaching fraternity. "They understand that it is often most d iffi cult to coach a very talented, successful team." As well, manager Graham Tough, assistant coaches Tom G iffin, John Davis, Mark Rowan and Kevin McLaughlin deserve recognition. "Kevin joined the staff this year when he returned to Oakville (he previously coached the midget A A A Rangers) and ran all of the prac tices and was great with the boys. " Mark did a fantastic job with the goalies. Tom was a steady influence on the bench and Johnnie always kept things loose. His pre-gamer during the O M H A 's won't be forgotten. " Graham, following in the footsteps of Rob Ringwald, did a great job as w ell." Murray also gave a plug to the club's Mitron system. " If anyone ever questioned the value of the Mitron program, this team is living proof that it works. From summer dryland, pre-season condi tioning skates, in season dryland, high tempo/high flow practices, this team did it all, and it paid huge dividends." Dodge thought his troops put in a worthy battle in the championship game. " It was a good game," he said. "Both teams really put on a show. They just finished the chances when they had to. showed a lot of character when we tried to come back and they played a real strong game." At the same time, he acknowl edged his own team's comeback. " I was really proud of the effort our team showed. They really showed their heart and came back hard." The silver medal caps off a remarkable minor hockey league career for this Oakville team. This team has more continuity then any N H L team, the nucleus of which stretches back eight long years to their minor novice year. They've won five O M H A gold medals, including the last three in a row. And in the other years they never strayed from the podium with two sil vers and one bronze medal. " I told the boys, bronze, two silver, three gold in the OM HA's and two sil vers in the O H F's, a big tournament win every year (Big Nickel in Sudbury this year). They've had a great run. and I just hope they can take that into some life lessons on how to compete, on how to win. on how to challenge." Added captain Nick Dodge: " It's tough, we've been together for so long and really developed some special bonds. It's going to be tough to see every one leave." W hile some of the players w ill be playing rep hockey in Oakville next year, no doubt many w ill try their hand at junior. At least one person won't be on any bench, any where, next season, though.
