The ins and outs of `selfies' That's H Life onestly, I think I may be the last holdout. Possibly the lone person on the planet who has yet to submit to this ubiquitous craze. I don't know whether I should be proud or ashamed to confess: I have never taken a sel e of, ah, myself. Initially the whole idea of a sel e seemed a little narcissistic, the domain of those who wile away their lives on social media. Alas, in time, the sel e grew legs, found its way into the mainstream and became somewhat less odious and slightly more endearing. Suddenly, people like the Pope and Barack Obama were taking sel es. Nowadays, sel es are unavoidable. They're everywhere. Heck, in 2013, sel e was unanimously selected Word Of The Year by The Oxford Dictionaries, which noted: "It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a sel e somewhere on the Internet...." Well, everyone who is anyone, except me. Nowadays, sel es are always in the news for reasons good, bad, and ugly. Take last week. First off, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin -- the second man to walk on the moon -- tweeted a ridiculously cool picture of himself in space, orbiting Earth back in 1966. Charged with photographing ultraviolet light from stars, Aldrin turned the camera on himself for an instant and snapped the outof-this-world self-portrait. Proving, of course, that sel es are really not that new. Later in the week, a woman was arrested in Atlanta, Ga., after police used a sel e she posted on Facebook to link her to a suspected crime ring. The woman -- now forever known as `the sel e suspect' -- got a subsequent sel e taken, in the form of a less-than- attering mug shot. Finally, an Alabama teen did a typically teen thing and took a sel e while visiting Poland with her grandmother. Unfortunately and (hugely) inappropriately, the smiling sel e was snapped at Aus- BIG DEAL! liquidators ArEA rugS 9 | Thursday, July 31, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Andy Juniper Guest Contributor chwitz, with the Nazi death camp as a backdrop. And then the Internet, being the Internet, nearly imploded in ire, issuing death threats against the girl. The good. The bad. And the ugly. Occasionally, however, a sel e transcends the norm. Occasionally, the stars align, a bodacious backdrop comes together, and a silly sel e turns into something more magical: a sweet, super-cool, snared slice of time. Take 16-year-old Tom White, for example. Earlier this month, White was hanging out with friends in his hometown of Omaha, Neb., when he got word that one of his idols, Paul McCartney, was dining with billionaire Warren Buffett at a downtown eatery. He rushed to the scene... and found Sir Paul and Warren sitting on a bench outside an icecream parlor. The subsequent sel e? White, wearing an ear-to-ear smile and giving the thumbs-up with Macca and Buffet in the background. He captioned the photo: "Chillin with my homies." And he became an overnight sel e sensation. Naturally, if the stars were to ever align for me like they aligned for White, I would not think twice about ending my no-sel e holdout. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www. facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/thesportjesters.
