He died on March 21, at age 77. at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. A memorial open house to celebrate his life will be held on Friday. April 5 at the Oakville G olf Club. 1154 Sixth Line, from 2 to 4 p.m. Bartman co-founded TOWARF Town of Oakville Water-Air Rescue Force - with Fred Oliver, former police chief and current Ward 3 councillor, in August 1954 following a drowning near Bronte. During the civil holiday week end. tragedy struck a group of sea scouts conducting canoe manoeuvres when a sudden storm capsized one of their craft resulting in the drowning deaths o f two scouts and a leader. Onlookers and local rescue organizers were powerless to help at the time. TOWARF's first boat was purchased thanks to a $3,000 donation from the Oakville Lions Club. Bartman served as Commander of master of ceremonies at its launch on June 16, 2001. Bartman. a descendant of an original pioneer family in the Bruce Peninsula, was bom in Wiarton, Ont.. on Sept. 10, 1924. He grew up in Mimico with his parents, two brothers and two sisters, and attended high school there. During World War II, he served in Coal Harbour on Vancouver Island with the Royal Canadian Air Force, patrolling the West Coast. While in Vancouver - he went to the mainland on leave - he met and married Buelah (Milly) Siddall, his wife of 53 years, on Sept. 14. 1946. In 1953, the couple moved into a new house he and his father built in Oakville. Bartman's father, a contractor, built several homes in town. The couple lived in that house for the rest of their lives, and raised their three children there - Gordon of Clarkson, Donna of Victoria, BC, and Lois o f Etobicoke. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a garden reception in 1996. After working for J. E. Willis Ltd., an automotive business, for many years, the couple opened Bartman W holesale Automotive Supplies in 1965 on Chisholm Street, and operated the business until retiring in 1987. In 1969, Bartman and his wife, along with Oliver and his wife, the late Kate Oliver, founded the Oakville Seniors' Light Tour and Christmas Social, an event local seniors continue to enjoy year after year. He was also a former member and past Commander of the Oakville Power Boat Club. Active in the community, Bartman received a Certificate of Merit from the Government o f Canada "in grateful recognition for his contribution to the community," in 1988. Bartman is survived by his son and two daughters, two grandchildren. Simon and Nicole, and two sisters. His wife predeceased him in November 1999.
