D2 - The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y M a y 1, 2002 Blakelock leads strong Halton presence at national cheerleading championships Schools from Halton, and Oakville in particular, have had a great year in elite cheerleading competitions. At the open nationals, run by Power Cheerleading Athletics in Toronto, this past weekend, Blakelock High School earned a bronze medal, edging out Milton District, who settled for fourth place, by the slimmest of margins. This was fitting as the two teams have battled each other all year. At the Ontario Cheerleading Federation provincial championships, held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga over the April 13/14 week end, Milton won the gold medal, edging out Blakelock who settled for the silver medal. At the central west competition, back in February. Milton also won gold, edging out Blakelock. At the Halton championships, which were held the previous day. Another highlight was the perform ance of the junior (elementary level) teams. At this past weekend's nationals, two Oakville schools -- Montclair and Heritage Glen -- finished first and sec ond, respectively. And third place went to Burlington's Rolling Meadows. A clean sweep for the Halton junior teams. It was more than sweet consolation for Montclair who were shut out of the provincial finals on a time violation. Heritage Glen and Rolling Meadows finished second and third, respectively, at the provincials. Back to the nationals, behind the previously mentioned Blakelock (3rd) and Milton (4th) were M .M . Robinson from Burlington (5th), White Oaks from Oakville (8th) and Oakville Trafalgar (10th). That's pretty outstanding to have all Halton teams make it to the finals and finish in the top ten.
