The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday M ay 1, 2002 - D3 iSSAQGA What a year for the Oakville Vytis bantam boys basketball team. See story for team list. Bottom 16th seed makes waves at the provincial championships The O akville Vytis bantam boys basketball team brought its first year o f existence to an exciting and rewarding conclusion in London over the April 19-21 weekend. Vytis started its inaugural season with opti mism. hoping to enter the provincial cham pi onships as high as divisions 4 or 5. However, the O ntario Basketball Association seeding com m ittee recognized Vytis' perform ance this year by rewarding the team with a place in division 3. In total, there are eight divisions ranked in order o f ability. The dow nside o f making divi sion 3 was getting a #16 seed (out o f 16). which left Vytis as a heavy underdog. On the Friday night Vytis squared off against #4 seed Blessed Sacrament (Ham ilton), a divi sion 1 m edalist last year. In an exciting contest Vytis erased a 15point. third-quarter deficit, ultim ately prevail ing 51-49. The trend continued the next m orning when the' confident team dispatched the #8 seed G loucester W olverines 55-44. By mid-afternoon word was out that Vytis was on a roll. A near-capacity crowd at Medway H.S watched as Vytis played the hometown #12 seed London Ramblers for first place. Vytis scored first and never trailed, taking the game 53-43. Vytis had done the improbable: a 3-0 pool record from a #16 seed, advancing them to a quarter-final playoff game against Cambridge. W hile the game entered the fourth quarter tied 40-40, Cam bridge found som e outside _$hopung and exem uuliy prevailed 63-50. (Cam bridge ultim ately won the silver medal with Vytis finishing a respectable 5th). A standing ovation couldn't mask the disap pointm ent o f the team after they had com e so close to a dream end to the season. T hroughout the tournam ent, Vytis was led offensively by Malik M ercurius (including? a career-high 28 points against B lessed Sacram ent) and Alex Silver (13 points and 12 rebounds per game). Chris Dickenson. Shane Dim ney and Phil Kom on show ed their court leadership and defensive speed. Strong rebounding and offen sive support, time and again, cam e from Jens Baziliauskas, Matt Donnelly, Chris Kamzol and Josh Spagnoletti. Point guards Tyler Bao and Joshua Fairbaim provided a solid outside threat and tenacious press coverage. The provincial cham pionships bring the team to the end o f its inaugural season. During the cam paign, O akville Vytis also m edalled in four tournam ents, including second place finishes in St. C atharines and Simcoe, third place in O akville and fourth place in Hamilton. Next year. Vytis is expecting to field two m inor bantam , two bantam and tw o midget team s, as the current m inor bantam and bantam teams split into different age groups. The Vytis players and coaches extend their appreciation to the team 's parents, supporters and sponsors, without whom the team would not have enjoyed the considerable success they achieved.
