T he O a kville Beaver, Wednesday May 1, 2002 - A 5 Halton Region creates diversity committee By Richard Vivian SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER With the establishment of the Halton Diversity Advisory Group (H D A G ), Halton Region is taking a proactive approach to maintaining a strong com munity, says Elizabeth Carmichael, chair of the North Halton Cultural Awareness Council. " This shows the Region recognizes that Halton is changing and that we are prepared to face these changes in a proactive manner and also sending the message that we welcome everyone as an equal citizen in our community," she said. "W e are pleased, too, the original focus has changed from race relations to diversity, as it's our opinion, focus ing only on race is narrow and limit ing." HD AG w ill act as an advisor to regional council on issues related to race relations, ageism, sexual orienta tion, disabilities, and other diversity issues. Specific actions and initiatives will be recommended to council for its consideration. " I 've been approached several times to try to get some initiative going at the Region with regard to race relations and diversity. For various reasons, the tim ing didn't seem to be appropriate. The timing could be no more appropriate than now, following what we saw on Sept. 11," said Regional Chair Joyce Savoline. " It became apparent afterwards that we don't have as tolerant a society as we would like to move towards," she said. The purpose of the group is to iden tify specific actions and initiatives to create an environment of understanding within the region. The committee w ill have a broad membership comprised of vested inter est groups, council representation and members from the general public. " Each issue w ill be handled by a working sub-committee and we'll be looking to expand the membership to include people interested in working on specific topics." Regular reports to the regional health and social services committee w ill provide recommendations for regional council to consider undertak ing. " The Region needs to be the driving force behind the groups and organiza tions and people within the community (already addressing diversity issues)," said Liala Erikson, president of the Halton Multicultural Council. " This is not addressing a crisis situation within the region... but looking very carefully at what is happening in our region and making sure we're ahead of what is happening." HDAG w ill receive no funding from the Region this year, with the exception of an information gathering audit already allocated under the strategic plan initiatives. Additional funds may be sought from the federal government, should the audit require more financial support. G> T r o o p e r O A K V IL L E l V E D R Y ! "One of the things looked at (in reports studied) is if you're spraying it on the lawn, is there a risk of kids or adults being exposed? In a lot of the studies, people would walk in bare-feet on the lawn to see how much they would pick up," continued Nosal. `The other thing is they'd measure the kids and adults going into the home to see how much was tracked in. There's a lot more concern with what is tracked indoors than what's on the lawn." On the lawn, there are naturally occurring mechanisms in the soil and bacteria that break down parts of the pesticides, he explained. Those mecha nisms don't exist on hardwood or car peted floors. Included in the motion was a request for the area municipalities to develop an education program relating to health issues and pesticide alternatives, that municipalities advocate "behind the counter" pesticide sales to the upper tier governments and municipalities consid er bylaws placing conditions on pesti cide use. "There has to be better licensing and knowledge within the industry to prop erly assess when those products are needed and how to apply them," Burlington Councillor John Taylor told the committee.
