www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 7, 2014 | 8 Butterfly decorations meant to inspire courage and hope in shelters, hospitals continued from p.1 The Garth Webb Secondary School student launched the program at the end of the past school year, when she began collecting supplies and monetary donations. Abid says she is still in need of donations of wood and art supplies, and is inviting local businesses and residents to be a part of her cause by contacting her at aizastbf@hotmail.com or 647864-2492. The butterfly cutouts will be delivered to participating art classes in elementary schools, such as Palermo Public School in Oakville and the DSBN Academy in St. Catharines, Ont., in time for the beginning of the new school year. They will then be decorated by Grades 6-8 students. Students in Kindergarten and higher grades, as well as any interested adults, will also be able to sign paper butterfly cutouts, which will be distributed, said Abid. The wooden decorations will then be sent to decorate the new Oakville hospital, once it opens, and the paper butterflies, along with donated stuffed toys and school supplies, will go to the McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton and homeless shelters in Peel Region. "I have contacted (representatives from) the new Oakville hospital and as it comes closer to its opening date, they will definitely find a way to incorporate the butterflies into the hospital," confirms Abid. She explained the reason the Hamilton hospital was selected as a recipient is because it already has a relationship with Aiza's Teddybear Foundation. "The Peel Region (school) directors showed great interest in helping me find schools and shelters with students who may need support," she said. "The butterflies will make a great addition to brighten up the shelters with colours and positivity.... (They) will act as a reminder for sick and underprivileged children to express themselves creatively and become a symbol of courage and happiness."
