Jazz Festival brings music downtown on Friday and Saturday by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, August 7, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Residents are sure to have a bounce in their step this weekend as downtown Oakville once again hosts more than 25 bands on six stages for the TD Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival. The Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area's (BIA) musical weekend has been running for more than 20 years. The free two-day festival on Lakeshore Road East, between Navy and Allan streets, will feature artists playing ragtime, swing, blues, Dixeland, acid, Latin, smooth, world music and fusion. Kicking off the event Friday night (Aug. 8) will be Dr. Lonnie Smith, a master of the Hammond B-3 organ for some 50 years. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Smith has been featured on more than 70 albums. He's been called a "living musical icon" and recorded and performed alongside some of the giants of the jazz, blues and R&B industry. On Saturday night (Aug. 9), the 2014 Junonominated singer, songwriter and producer Alysha Brilla will take the stage. The TanzanianCanadian released her first full-length album in 2013 and her songs have been featured on the Canadian crime drama King, as well as Degrassi: The Next Generation. Brilla's music video for the Swahili-infused song, Nobody, won her the 2013 Ibiza Music Video Festival Fan Choice Award. Helping to close the festival Saturday will be the Daryl Stuermer Duo. The Genesis lead guitarist of the duo found inspiration in his "electracoustic" guitar -- an instrument that can change between an electric and acoustic guitar with the flick of a switch. Stuermer was the co-writer on Phil Collins' 1989 Grammy Award-winning song, Something Happened On the Way to Heaven, and the signature guitar sound on the tracks, In the Air Tonight and Easy Lover. One of Canada's best-known, new world instrumental jazz artists Manteca will cap off the evening Saturday. The Juno Award-winning jazz orchestra has toured worldwide and shared the stage with the likes of Miles Davis, Ella, Van Morrison.
