Warwick shire. For those who have a fas cination with "The Royals" or think they have seen every car museum display worth seeing, this is some thing truly different. The Heritage M otor Centre will be showing this unique exhibition of royal cars as part of HM Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations. The royal exhi bition comprises nine spe cially selected cars, which were used by the Queen and her immediate family for private and state occasions. The Queen has used Land Rover vehicles as her personal transport for many years, particularly when off duty, travelling around her extensive country home estates in Scotland and Norfolk. She currently drives a Land Rover Defender 110 County Station Wagon, 2001 model year, when driving on and off-road. The 1983 Land Rover 110" Station Wagon, donated by Her Majesty to the Royal collection, was in service until last year on the private Crown estates of Sandringham and Balmoral as rural transport for royal pursuits. The vehicle is fitted with some equipment to special order, including leather seats and security radio sys tem and is finished in unique green paint to Her Majesty's personal choice. Some o f the cars have been personally loaned by m em bers o f the Royal Family, such as Prince Philip's 1980 Lucas Bedford CF electric limousine. This vehicle was a limousine ver sion of the Bedford CF van used by the Post Office for city deliveries in the 1970s. When Prince Philip toured the Lucas factory in Birmingham in November 1977, he was shown exam ples of the electric vehicle. Always interested in new technology, the Prince was keen to try out his own model. The limousine was fitted with a Lucas 40 kW The 1954 Land Rover, Royal Review Vehicle spe cially adapted for royal occasions from a basic 86inch wheelbase Land Rover. The body was custom designed with a rear plat form from which the Queen could acknow ledge the crow ds. The vehicle was in materials; wood veneer, leather and chrome finish. This car is painted in a spe cial dark green colour cho sen by Her Majesty. The oldest car in the col lection is the 1900 Daimler 6hp Mail Phaeton. In 1896 His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (later His Majesty King Edward VII,) was given his first experi ence of the motorcar in a Daimler car. This led to the Prince buying his own Daimler car in 1900. a twocylinder 6hp car fitted with Mail Phaeton bodywork by Hooper. This was the beginning o f a close association between Royalty and the Daimler car. This car is on loan from Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and was completely restored by the National Motor Museum to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and is nor mally displayed in the Royal M otor M useum at Sandringham. A 1955 Jaguar Mark VII M is on loan from Jaguar D aim ler Heritage Trust. This car was used by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, for pri vate transport up until 1973. Thecar is finished in a spe cial metallic version of the royal colour Claret. A 1968 MG MGC sportscar is on loan from His Royal Highness the Prince o f Wales. The MGC was designed to be the replace ment for the aging Austin Healey 3000 and was based on the contemporary MGB GT. but with the larger 3litre engine from the Austin Healey. This car was driven per sonally by Prince Charles for many years and then he presented it to the Queen's Head Chauffeur, Harry Purvey, who used the MGC for four years before it then passed in to the collection at Sandringham. This car was refurbished by students from Manchester College o f Arts and Technology and was pre sented back to the Prince o f Wales in 1999. A 1968 Vanden Plas Princess 4-litre was one o f the last to be produced by the Austin Company. A substantial number of these cars were used by the Royal Household over the years. The 1971 Rover P5B 3.5litre saloon car in the exhibi tion is on loan from HM Queen Elizabeth.
