This charity performance is being held to assist Community Living Oakville and Oaklands Regional Centre, tw'o agencies serving developmentally-handicapped residents of Oakville. The Canadian Orpheus Male Choir, now under the baton of Stephane Potvin, was founded in 1977 by Conductor Emeritus, Lyn Harry and was originally know'n as the Hamilton Orpheus Male Choir. The choir has grown signifi cantly from its original nucleus of seven, to more than 80 members. Based on the Welsh male choir tradition, this Canadian choir now reflects the multicultural nature of our country, with a membership that consists of men from many national backgrounds. The repertoire is varied, including opera choruses, spiritu als, hymns, popular music, songs from musicals, ballads and folk songs. The Canadian Orpheus Male Choir has performed more than 440 concerts in venues such as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, St. Paul's Cathedral. Westminster Abbey and The Royal Albert Hall in London. Major concert tours have taken the choir to the United States, Western Canada, the Maritime provinces. Europe. Britain and Ireland. In addition to producing 11 recordings, the choir has, on numerous occasions, appeared on television in Britain and Canada. Guest clarinetist Susan Strunc received her bachelor of music from the University of Toronto and is currently com pleting a M aster's degree at McGill University. She has per· formed in various ensemble setting locally and abroad. Strunc has also appeared at numerous summer festivals, including The Banff Center, Domain Forget, the Orford Center for the Arts and the Danubelands Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. She is a veteran of a number of local orchestras, most notably Symphony Hamilton. She is also a busy teacher of piano as well as clarinet. Strunc is a founding member o f the Onyx Wind Quintet, with whom she has played for the last seven years and has travelled and performed largely within Canada, but also Japan, Germany and Austria. As the Male Orpheus Choir celebrates its 25th anniversary, the public is invited to join the festivities. Tickets cost S 15 and S13 for seniors over 60 and juniors under 15. Community Living Oakville and Oaklands support more than 400 people who have a developmental handicap. This support is offered in day programs, residential situations, employment training and work experience. Community Living Oakville and Oaklands employs about 225 people and receives most of their required funding from the Ministry of Community and Social Services. With recent funding reductions, fundraising is becoming more important for agencies such as these. Simon to perform at synagogue Shaarei-Beth El Congregation is presenting An Evening with Jon Simon, one of North America's foremost contemporary Jewish musical artists this Saturday. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at the Shaarei-Beth El Congregation, 186 Morrison Rd. Tickets cost $36 for adults and S18 for students. A special pre-concert reception and preferred seating costs $75 per ticket. This is a fundraising event for the synagogue. Everyone is invited for coffee and dessert after the concert where CDs will be available for sale. Simon has released several recordings that have captivated and inspired audiences throughout the world. His repertoire of Jewish music combines beloved traditional melodies and well-known folk songs from die Jewish heritage with a uniquely beautiful piano style. Simon takes his audience on a jour ney featuring timeless Jewish music from the 7th century right up to today.
