www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, August 6, 2014 | 12 Burloak paddlers set sights on more world medals by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff Throughout his kayaking career, Burloak Canoe Club's Brady Reardon has proven his diversity. He made his world championship debut in 2007 racing in K-2 (kayak doubles), made his mark at the Olympics in 2008 in the K-4 final and won a World Cup silver medal in K-1 in 2012. Reardon will get a chance to show that diversity once again at the International Canoe Federation World Championships this week in Moscow. He'll race in both the K-2 and K-4 1,000-metre races. "I've never done two 1,000s before," Reardon said before leaving for worlds. "The schedule is good so it should be manageable." Reardon and partner Andrew Jessop of Halifax will open with the K-2 heats and semis tomorrow (Thursday). Phillipe Duchesneau and Burloak member Rob Clarke will join them for K-4 heats and semis Friday. The finals will then take place on the weekend, K-2 on Saturday and K-4 on Sunday. While Reardon teamed up with four-time Olympic medallist Adam van Koeverden for the K-2 at last year's worlds, he heads to Moscow as the veteran in both boats. The 28-yearold Burlington resident has competed at five previous world championships, three more than the rest of the crew combined. For Clarke, Reardon was among the elite group of paddlers that served as inspiration for the Mississauga native when he joined Burloak in 2007. "I've been here since I was 17 years old," Clarke said. "At 17, I didn't start (training) with them, but I used them as a goal. I wanted to be part of that group." The biggest obstacle the crew will face is its lack of time in a boat together. The crew only raced at national team trials and one World Cup, where it finished 12th. But Reardon said it's not unlike the K-4 crew that was assembled prior to the 2010 Olympic trials. That team upset the favourites for Canada's Olympic spot and went on to make the final in Beijing. "It was the same situation with not a lot of time training together, but we were able to overcome it," he said. "In previous years, the teams were decided earlier and you had the World Cups to work through things. It's just getting used to everybody and the way they move the boat." And though the rest of the crew may not have Reardon's international resumé, they have their share of international experience. Duchesneau won silver and bronze medals at the 2011 Pan Am Games and Jessop and Clarke both competed at the world under-23 championships. Clarke and Duchesneau were also members of Canada's K-4 entry at Burloak Canoe Club's Brady Reardon practises recently on Oakville's Sixteen Mile Creek. | photo by Eric Riehl -- Oakville Beaver -- @Halton_Photog last year's worlds, finishing 14th. Before leaving for worlds, Clarke said the crew was looking forward to the pre-world training camp in Lithuania for an opportunity to get more time in the boat together. "It will be good to get acclimatized to the time change and to work on very specific things to go our fastest," the 24-year-old said. Also headed to worlds is Burloak's Aaron Rublee. Two years ago, Rublee and Jason McCoombs went head to head for a place on the Canadian Olympic team. After splitting the first of two races to determine the spot, McCoombs won the deciding race by threetenths of a second to earn the trip to London. Rublee and McCoombs will now team up to race the C-2 (canoe doubles) 200m at worlds. This will be Rublee's third world championships, having represented Canada when it hosted in 2009 and then again in 2011. The Kamloops, B.C. native and longtime Burloak member isn't content with simply getting back to worlds. "We're not just going to show up to the line," the 29-year-old said. "Jason and I can make a boat move pretty quick so we're hopeful and optimistic about how fast we can go." Rublee helped Canada claim a relay bronze medal on the World Cup circuit in 2011 and last year earned a silver in the C-1 200m at the World Cup in the Czech Republic. Though he and McCoombs didn't race on the World Cup circuit this year, Rublee is pleased with his preparations. "A little bit of race experience is always nice to have, but I really enjoy the club environment (at Burloak)," he said. "I think I took it for granted. Coming back here to prepare was something I missed. It keeps me enthusiastic." -- Herb Garbutt can be followed on Twitter @Herbgarbutt Snyder (best female at Fogh Boorman; second at Steerers) and Alex MacQuarrie (second at Four Sisters).Other competitors for the club this season have been Kim Kirkpatrick, Alex Thayer, Nicolas Abgrall-Chouinard, Emile Beaudoin, Ally Dandy, Tijana Despot, Anna Rzepka, Peter Hjirban, Linus Reiger, Michael Dandy, Michael Ceasak and James Hume.
