www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 14, 2014 | 8 Channing pitches Softball for Liz in support of girl he loves Fundraiser to benefit cancer research set for Aug. 17 at Palermo Park others," said Channing, who was born and raised in Oakville, and lives in the town with Hill. "You see the person you love and she's going through a lot of struggles. That's not really fair for a 24-yearold, or anyone for that matter, to go through." Hill was diagnosed with a brain tumour in November 2011 and was told it was stable, but its growth needed to be monitored every six months. Last November, doctors told her the tumour had reached anaplastic astrocytoma stage 3, which meant cancer. Hill had surgery at Toronto Western Hospital and received further care at Princess Margaret Hospital. Although Hill's sister, Ashley, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at age 20 in Sept. 2008, Hill was told it was not genetic and she did not need to be tested. After requesting an MRI multiple times, Hill was finally given one and her tumour was discovered. Ashley's condition is currently stable, but like her sister must go in for check-ups every six months. "When it hits this close," said Channing, "it's a big wake-up call; how far behind we are in the research and how much we need to donate to make sure this doesn't happen anymore." Wanting to do `something more', Channing decided to not only help organize a team for the upcoming Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer Tournament at Toronto's Exhibition Place on Sept. 27, but to also hold a softball fundraiser Sunday, Aug. 17 to ensure more funds would be raised for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Along with his cousin Mike Zelek, and with the aid of the Glen Abbey Slo-Pitch League, Channing is putting on the inaugural Softball for Liz fundraiser at Palermo Park, 2345 Dundas St. W., and is expecting more than 100 people to attend. The event, which runs 5-9 p.m., will include a home-run derby and fastest pitching competition, as well as a silent auction and 50/50 draw. "We were looking for a way to expand our participation in the road hockey tournament and raise more money," said Channing. "We're both very involved in Oakville sports and play on a Glen Abbey Slo-Pitch team, so it all kind of fits." The pair hopes to raise $3,000 from the softball fundraiser and has set a team goal of $12,000 for the charity by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff When Oakville's Elizabeth Hill was told she had a brain tumour at age 21, she had one overpowering emotion -- fear. "I was scared. I kept saying, `How could this happen to me? I am a healthy 21-year-old,'" Hill told the Oakville Beaver . "I had so many questions and not enough answers. There were definitely a few tears and a lot of hugs." The now 24-year-old resident says it has been the support of her family, friends and her boyfriend Patrick Channing that helped her through the emotional roller coaster of treatment and survival. "She's a very positive girl and one of those people always willing to help road hockey tournament. Hill says she was surprised and taken aback when Channing and Zelek told her what they were planning. "They have already taken on a huge role by participating in the Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer Tournament and organizing this event just shows how they are always going over and beyond to support me and others fighting this battle," she said. "People I have never met are donating and talking about the event. It's very exciting." For more on Softball'n for Liz, contact Channing at patrick.channing@ yahoo.com or 416-708-0306.
