Summer Company is evolving continued from p.6 faced by the young people, and more. Massow noted this type of program has come a long way from those that existed when he was growing up. "There used to be a grant program, where the government would give you a certain amount of money to go out and start your business, but there was no structure behind it. There was no mentoring, there was no program to make sure I was doing what I said I would do. It was just a cheque that you got in the mail," he said. "What they are doing right now, having mentors in the meeting and having a computer program where they have to enter the hours they have worked and their expenses, makes them accountable for the business plan they have set. That is a huge benefit." Massow also praised the creative ideas, such as the multicultural children's books, which have come from the entrepreneurs this year. He pointed out that some of the entrepreneurs are very technical this year with one building synthesizers and Blue Tooth portable speakers. "This is the first we've had kids at that technical level building a product and delivering the product. It is an interesting set of challenges these kids have over someone who is teaching swimming lessons or cutting grass," said Massow. 7 | Thursday, August 14, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com There used to be a grant program, where the government would give you a certain amount of money to go out and start your business, but there was no structure behind it. They understand the very specifics, but there are questions like how am I going to build the business if I don't have the money and where am I going to find customers and how do I define the client?"
