What may be a good window treatment for your bay window may not be the best choice for your other window styles. Here are some decorating solutions for the different types of windows in your home from Yasmin Siboldi. Manager of Visual Merchandising at Blinds To Go. Skylights: Siboldi recommends using a highly efficient insulating pleated or cel lular shade, which lets light in, but blocks heat and cold. You can move the shades, with the help of an optional collapsible wand. Special shades can be custom designed with side rails for support. Sliding Doors: Vertical blinds are still the most popular option for sliding doors, according to Siboldi. "They can be installed within the frame or over the glass, but you don't necessarily have to choose a vertical blind if your other window treatments in the room are something other than verticals," she added. You can also use horizontal blinds, but it's advis able to install two sets on one head-rail. This makes it easier to get in and out, as you can raise one blind and leave the other down. French Doors: "The key is to think of the door as a window, which happens to be in a door," said Siboldi. " It is usually best to use the same products as those already on the windows in your room to establish consistency." She said a blind or shade works just fine, and can easily be fastened at the bottom of the door with hold down brackets so your treatment won't flop around as the door opens and closes. The blind or shade can easily be removed from the bracket whenever you want to raise it. Very large windows: Whenever a window is extremely large, the weight of your shade makes it difficult to raise and puts unnecessary tension on the strings (which may cause the strings to break). You may need to consider special con trol options. For blinds, Siboldi advises dividing them up into multiple blinds on a single head-rail, or choose multiple blinds and install them side-byside. Usually there are multiple windows within a single opening, so you should usually divide up the blinds to line up with the windows. When you do this, it's important to use one valance to span all the head-rails to give the appearance of one single window treatment. Windows with a nice view: When you have a window with a great view, Siboldi recommends a shade or blind that pulls up as tightly as possible so you can ensure an unobstructed sight-line. " Pleated or cellular shades are a perfect choice, as they can pull up tightly and also provide insulation bene fits," she added. Blinds that offer a top-down or bottom-up stacking option are also a great choice for windows with a view. Although generally very popular, wood blinds are not Siboldi's first choice for these types of windows because of their very bulky " stack", or the slats bunched up at the top of the head-rail. Arches: The most popular treatment for this type of window is a pleated shade because of its ability to fan into a semi-circle. While horizontal blinds can be made to fit arches, they are generally too costly. - News Canada DRASTIC REDUCTION!
