The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday, January 1, 2003 -A5 School boards to expand in 2003 (Continued from page A1) " It is clearly expected that the sup plementary special education funds will provide increased levels of resources and services to those students. " It is anticipated that additional resources will also be provided to sup port a wide range of academic programs as well as additional support services for our school facilities." said Piovesan. He noted that in the past year the board acquired more than 500 state-ofthe-art computers for elementary and secondary school computer labs and offices. There was also a large acquisi tion of updated textbooks covering core subjects. Both administrators acknowledged there has been and w ill continue to be a period of unparalleled physical expan sion of their respective boards. " The year 2002 provided the Catholic system with a period of unprecedented growth with the opening of two elementary and two secondary schools and the addition of more than 1.000 students " said Piovesan. The four new schools reduced the need for portable classrooms across the board, he said. The Catholic board's more than 100 portables are now mould-resistant, air-conditioned mod els, he noted. " We will continue refining short and long-term plans for building new schools and for renovating older school facilities. It is anticipated that we will begin the construction of one new school and undertake second and thirdphase renovations to several older schools," Piovesan said. Gardiner said the Halton public board will see similar capital develop ments. " In September 2003 our board will open three new elementary schools, and it is hoped a fourth will be near comple tion. "It is expected that in June of this year we w ill see quite a number of our principals and vice-principals retire; with them will go a vast amount of experience and knowledge.... there is no question that we have people ready to assume these administrative positions," said Gardiner. " During the coming months, there w ill be great excitement as (new) school names are selected, principals and vice principals are appointed and staff is chosen. During the next school year, the General Brock-Lord Elgin integration plans w ill be finalized in preparation for the September 2004 opening of the new composite high school. As well, conaffecting many senior high school stu dents at all boards across the province, is the double cohort graduation. " Students from Grade 12 and OAC will leave our secondary schools; it remains to be seen whether or not uni versities and colleges are prepared to accommodate these graduating stu dents," said Gardiner. Accountability and flexibility at both boards is also a hot topic. "Another component to our commit ment to continuous improvement was the establishment of a systemic audit committee, composed of a broadlybased representation of system stake holders who undertook and completed a review of our strengths and areas need ing improvement," said Piovesan. The process of implementing the recommendations in the committee's report will be undertaken in 2003. he said. Gardiner said that during 2003 her board's strategic outcomes plan, focus ing on student achievement, will be implemented with accountability agree ments in place to ensure compliance. "For the first time in the history of the Halton board, policies are in place which focus on student achievement. "Our strategic outcomes w ill be measured and regularly monitored with the results communicated to the public. We will present data to ensure account ability for student achievement." Halton District School Boanl struction will begin on the new Glen Abbey high school in Oakville." Gardiner said the Halton District School Board has started to address its very significant student accommodation issues and that " this emotional and dif ficult topic w ill continue to be a high priority as we review the Capital Strategic Plan." There w ill be a public meeting on revisions to the C SP on Jan. 8 . Another contentious issue, one Friends bring Christmas spirit to OTMH H and-m ade greeting cards m ake p a tients sm ile By Paula Henriques T O AKVILLE B EA V ER STAFF he creativity of two 12 -year-old girls brought smiles to patients at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Christmas Eve. Brittany Sadkowski and Jessica Minnett. best friends since age six, cre ated 132 handmade cards to pass on the festive spirit to those who had to spend Christmas within the hospital's walls. The friends said the cards took almost one month to complete, and many school recesses were given up to finish them in time. Made out of con struction paper, they drew Christmas trees, snowmen and candy canes on the front of the cards, and within, wrote hopeful messages for the new year and signed each one. With their own babysitting earnings, the girls bought stuffed animals and dolls for children and mothers-to-be. " We wanted to do something special and help spread some Christmas cheer,"said Sadkowski. The two Montclair Public School stu dents were first inspired after completing a charity project at the school, where each class raised money for as many different organizations as possible. Enjoying the project, they decided to go the extra mile and do something on their own. Minnett said they wanted to do some thing at Christmas lime for people and where it would be most appreciated. The cards were distributed to new mothers, ill children and patients at the Transitional Care Unit (TCU). Many patients were surprised when handed a card, and all had a smile. "These are fantastic. Thank you, and Merry Christmas to you, too." said one TCU patient. Trish Carlton, public relations manag er at OTM H, was very impressed by the girls' initiative and said "it's wonderful when youth get involved like this. "They've taken the time to think about it, the time to do it, and to come in. They've cared enough to do this. They've brought the Christmas spirit to the OTM H." -Body Contouring - Uposculpture, Endermologie · Lightsheer Laser Hair Removal · Blepharoplasty · injectables - Botox. Restylane. Norwalk -- which has been spreading aggressively throughout southern and east ern Ontario. including Oakville -- is not the Hu. Everyone is susceptible, and. unlike influenza, there is no vaccine. "Norwalk virus can be prevented by consistently practicing proper personal hygiene, particularly after going to the washroom," said D'Cunha. " We know the virus is active and has spread considerably." Symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, myalgia, malaise and lowgrade fever. Norwalk virus is spread through improper hygiene, such as poor hand washing practises. It can also be spread by sharing food and utensils with an infected per son, or by coming in contact with an infected surface such as door handles. If you think you may be experiencing Norwalk virus symptoms, call Telehealth Ontario at I -866-797-00(X) to speak to a registered nurse who will help you determine how to deal with your symp toms. The best way to prevent the spread of Norwalk Virus is by washing hands thor oughly after each trip to the washroom. Particular atten tion should be given to clean ing objects that are frequently handled such as taps, door handles, knobs, banisters, toi lets and bath rails. If you are suffering from Norwalk Virus, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and make sure to wash your hands prop erly to not infect others.
