www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, August 20, 2014 | 20 Peewees needed two straight wins and a Burlington loss to reach provincial final continued from p.19 reaching the provincial final before settling for silver. Sunday, the Hawks nearly pulled off double gold on the TRAC floor. The Oakville peewees defeated the Orangeville Northmen 10-6 in their championship game, and the bantams took the Clarington Green Gaels to two overtime periods before finally succumbing, 6-5. Peewees The peewee Hawks jumped out to a 5-1 first-period lead, saw the Northmen rally to within a goal and then pulled away again for what turned out to be a comfortable victory. "We executed really well in the first period. Not to sound cliché, but we were winning a lot of little battles... and our goalie Davis Tolnai made a few huge saves that allowed us to get that lead," said Merrill. "Our boys really dealt well with (Orangeville's comeback). There was no panic on our bench. It pulled them closer together. A true sign of a champion is how you deal with adversity." The Hawks had their share of that earlier in the tournament. After losing just twice during the regular season and once in its seven games at provincial qualifiers, Oakville opened the Ontario championships with a 1-1-1 record. Not able to afford another loss in round-robin play, the Hawks trailed Mimico 3-2 late in their fourth contest. Oakville rallied for a 4-3 victory (with captain Owen Sage providing the winner) and routed Shelburne 8-2 in its last game of the preliminary round. The Hawks still needed some help to reach the final, which they got when already-eliminated Mimico upset the Burlington Chiefs. Other members of the provincial champion peewee 1 Hawks are Dante Mancini, Jack Natyshak, Myles Newport, Ryan Sheppard, Ethan Stainton, Luke Dawick, Ethan Harkins, Dante Parisotto, Jake Dawick, Ryan Brooks, Chris Dong, James Carroll, Landon Masse, Tyler Ford, Max Boulanger, Cam Tolnai, Chase Strychaluk and Brian Jackman. The coaching staff also includes Rock player Bill Greer, Pat Walko and Ben Neeb. Bantams A hard-fought loss in the bantam final was all too familiar for Billings and several of his charges, who fell 6-3 to St. Catharines in last year's title match. Oakville battled back from 2-0 and 5-3 deficits to force overtime. After the first overtime period was scoreless, the Gaels won in sudden death after a disputed shot-clock reset extended their possession. "This one was tougher to swallow than the last one, probably because it went to double OT," said Billings, who was the club's assistant coach last year. "A game like that is decided on one or two bounces. I thought if we had another shot at it, we could have won that game just as easily as (Clarington) did. The saving grace is that there's nothing you can take out of that game that our team didn't do well. It just happened to be (the Gaels') game and not ours." Oakville posted three wins and a tie in its first four round-robin games, clinching a spot in the final before an 8-5 loss to Clarington to end the preliminary round. Josh Dawick (11 goals, four assists), Phillip Mazzuca (seven goals, six assists), Harrison Rees (three goals, nine assists) and Luke Pilcher (eight goals, one assist) led the Oakville attack in the tournament. Also contributing to the silver-medal win were Conner Pickford, Grant Paterson, Jake Howden, Aidan Child, Rogan Doyle, Jeffery Skidmore, Eyhan Riggs, Grayden Power, Calvin Onate, Jacob Martino, Mathew Hill, Curtis Douglas, Vinny Tucci and Ryan Nirula. FX Shea and Shawn Gonneau also coached the team, particularly in the first half of the season as Billings recovered from knee surgery. -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports Oakville Non-Contact Hockey Halton/ oakville Halton & Oakville Halton Men's Men's Recreational Recreational Hockey League Hockey League Fall/Winter ( Our 55th Season! ) (Our 57th Season!)
