Competing in the cadet divi sion, Chris Wickens, 12, had the meet of his dreams in Woodstock, on April 20. win ning six individual gold medals, including overall, and one lone silver. His day was also topped off with a gold in the team divi sion. Brianne Long, 9. competing in pre-novice 2 in Brantford, on May 4, also finished first overall. Long and her teammates also came home with the Metro West Team Award and all will be honoured at Champions Day in September at Paramount Canada's Wonderland. An Oakville Trafalgar grad, Strobele has already qualified for the world championships w hich are being hosted by the Hamilton Yacht Club, Aug. 21-Sept. 3. In this tune-up event, Strobele Finished in sixth place. Long is also coached by Craig Smith (bars & vault), Svetlana Degtava (floor) and Olga Dudchenko (beam). Wickens is coached by Chris Foo. Included, here are their complete results: Thunder roars to bronze at eastern Canadians The Oakville Thunder midget girls rep team returned with the bronze medal from the East Canadian National Tournament that was held in Sherbrooke Quebec this past weekend (May 912). It was a three-day tournament and the calibre of volleyball was impressive. Quebec was heavily represented and there were also many teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I and Ontario. The Oakville team won every game they played on Saturday and narrowly missed playing for gold on Sunday when they faced Carouges from Quebec whom they had beaten in three sets in an earlier round. Oakville Thunder took an early lead and mid dle blocker Heather Kaptein kept their hitters in line in the first set. The Quebec team regrouped and their strategy in the second set was to set the balls off the net to avoid Kaptein's powerful blocking skills and Oakville Thunder's defensive skills were put to the test by Carouges strong outside hitter. Lorenza Sisca, Thunder's power hitter, retaliat ed with some forceful hits of her own to make the second set a very exciting game to watch. The final result was 22-25, 25-18. 15-5. The final game against Summerside Oaks Spikers, P.E.I.'s top seeded team, was a straight victory for the Thunder, 25-17, 25-19. Oakville Thunder played an aggressive hard hitting game and strong serving by Melanie O'Connor brought the team to a third place finish in Tier 2. Oakville player Lianne Wilson was voted as a member of the tier 2 all-star team which was a well deserved award to this all round, hard hitting, untiring athlete who led this team to their success. Hornets bring back bronze from provincials after close loss in semis The Oakville Hornets bantam BB rep hockey team, sponsored by Investors Group and DiMarco Golf, brought back the bronze medal from the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championships. Oakville earned the right to rep resent the local region in the provin cial championships by eliminating Mississauga, Burlington and Halton Hills in playdown action. Oakville won the bronze medal game 2-0 over South Point. Emma Hobson and Abby McMillan were the goal scorers. The semifinal game was Oakville's only loss of the champi onship tournament, 1-0 to London. London went on to win the gold medal.
