"You can't measure how valuable this information is to programs," said Terry Delmore, of the Halton Region Health Department. "This is a major thing we're doing, with great benefit." Members of the Halton health and social services committee approved renewal of the RRFSS program last week. Regional council approved it Wednesday. The RRFSS was established last year with the York University Institute, which also operates the program with 20 other health units province-wide. Through the program, a continuous series of random telephone interviews are conducted with local residents to gather perceptions pertaining to any number of health-related issues (smok ing, West Nile Virus, work time missed due to injury, etc.). Information is then broken down to provide locally relevant statistics by gender, age, location of residence and other factors. "My gut, cynical reaction is to ask what are we learning that we don't already know," commented Burlington Councillor Jack Dennison, pointing to the $39,000-price tag and staff time involved in the program. But this information can be used to provide detailed analysis to aid in developing marketing techniques to reach specific portions of the popula tion, responded Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton's medical officer of health. "I'm really excited about this. We are going to see huge differences in program planning, targeted program planning in the next few years," he told the health committee.
