In what has been dubbed Project Back to School A fghanistan, local stu dents filled Ziplock bags with school supplies - everything from pens and erasers to toothbrushes -- for collection last Wednesday. T he goods w ere picked up last Friday and will be sent to CFB Trenton where they will be loaded on a m ilitary je t on Dec. 15 and flow n to Kabul, Afghanistan. There, Canadian forces will distrib ute them to the local schools. It's part o f an initiative by em ployees o f G older A ssociates, a Canadian envi ronmental engineering firm w hich is collecting donations at each o f its 40 Canadian offices this month. T he com pany has 80 offices w orld w ide. A large transport truck w ill travel from Vancouver to M ississauga picking up donated item s from each G older office before p roceeding to CFB Trenton. "Canadian Peacekeepers have taken an active role in the redevelopm ent A fghanistan," explained R iver O aks Public S chool k indergarten teacher Sally Fairs, w ho spearheaded the event at her school. "The kids and their fam ilies have been very supportive," said Fairs. "We have a ton o f stuff." Some o f the supplies put into the "back-to-school" packs included: pens, notebooks, pencils, pencil cases, pencil crayons, m arkers, gluesticks, rulers, pencil sharpeners, m arkers, stickers, erasers, sm all solar-pow ered calcula tors, and even toothpaste, tooth brushes, and soap. It's a case o f netw orking that saw all o f this com e about. Fairs' husband, John, w orks in geom atic services at G older's M ississauga office. He picked up on an e-m ail sent throughout the com pany by Calgary office colleague Larry Veilleux, w ho is in com m unity and corporate relations. "I've never actually met Larry, but he sent out a cou p le o f e-m ails," explained John. "I picked up on the m essages and knew I had to tell Sally about it." V eilleux w as a classm ate o f Canadian Forces M ajor Steve W helan, o f the Kabul M ultinational Brigade, w ho is responsible for redevelopm ent activities in Kabul.
