Opened last Tuesday to a swelteringly hot reception by over 100 attendees. Fig Trees: A Video Opera, fills both Oakville Galleries locations and utilizes 18 screens and televisions, a sushi bar, a toy train, an urn o f pills and a minivan. W ritten and directed by critically acclaimed, Genie-award winning film maker John Greyson, with the haunting music composed by David Wall, each scene o f the video opera is in a different room or section o f the galleries. It begins in the Oakville G alleries' Gairloch Gardens location, with three scenes in the three rooms o f the main floor o f the house. Immediately upon walking in, the haunting rum ble o f Wall's music sets the tone for the bulk of the exhibition. The main thread holding the produc tion together is the story o f AIDS activist Zackie Achmat (Van Abrahams), founder o f South A frica's Treatm ent Action Campaign (TAC). At the beginning o f the show, Achmat is suffering through a treatment strike, refusing to take drugs to lessen the degrading effects o f HIV unless those drugs are available to all infected people o f South Africa. In the first scene, Achmat is giving a speech, via satellite, from his hospital bed to the 2002 Barcelona AIDS Conference. The environment for the first scene consists o f three theatre chairs, equipped with headphones, in front o f a large screen, accompanied on either side by slabs o f plastic with Achm at's speech written on it. Due to a poor satellite feed to the conference, A chm at's address was chopped to pieces, creating strange, yet poignant sentences like "I am not able to have medicine with dignity."
