Joining up with several Greater Toronto Area (GTA) swim clubs under the banner of the Toronto all-stars, they won the over-all female national title. Western Canadian teams had won this title the previ ous 10 years. The Oakville swimmers who competed "did an awe some jo b ," said Oakville Aquatic Club (OAC) coach Christy Yaremczuk. In particular, Marco Monaco broke five club records and was the only 17 year old male (in a field of mostly rnid-20 year old Canadian and world record holders) to make finals. His results are as follows: ·7 th . 200 breast (2:17.03) · 8th. 100 breast (1:03.39) · 8th. 200 IM (2:06.04) ·8 th . 400 IM (4:31.06) · 14th, 50 breast (29.9) These results rank him as the number one 17 year old male in the country in the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM. Julia Pomeroy also had some history breaking per form ances with a bronze medal performance in the 50 breast (32.60 - an Oakville Aquatic Club record), a 10th place finish in the 100 breast (1:10.9) and shared gold medals in the 4 x 100 med ley `A' relay (1:10.10) and the 4 x 50 medley `A' relay (31.90) which broke a Canadian record. Ice in tough against top teams Against, arguably, the two best women's hockey teams east of Manitoba, the Oakville Ice only allowed five goals in two games over the weekend in National W om en's Hockey League (NWHL) action. Unfortunately, however, they only scored one goal, themselves, to continue their frustration this regular season against the NWHL top tier. Perhaps most frustrating for the Ice was Saturday's 2-1 loss to the powerful Toronto Aeros, a team they have not beaten this season, but have come tantalizingly close, the last two losses by one-goal margins. The Ice opened up the scoring on a goal by Carly Haggard, assisted by Kimberley Insalaco. But the Aeros tied it up late in the second period and won it late in the third period with both goals scored by Olympic gold medalist Geraldine Heaney (with assists to Cassie Turner and Jennifer Butsch). On Friday night, the host Ice were shut down 3-0 by visiting Brampton T hunder who had goals by Tara McKay. Kristy Zamora and Allyson Fox. On the year, Oakville, in third place in the tough central divi sion. is now 0-3 against first place Toronto and 1-5 against second place Brampton.
