www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, August 22, 2014 | 12 Kidnapping survivor, journalist Melissa Fung `breaks bread' for the cause Canadian journalist and kidnapping survivor Melissa Fung will return to Oakville's St. John's United Church on Sept. 9. Fung will be the guest speaker for the 262 Randall St. church's inaugural Breaking Bread event, which is also presented by Canadians in Support of Afghan Women. Two years ago, Fung related the details of her kidnapping in Afghanistan in 2008 at St. John's Church. In 2013, she returned to the country with Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan). "This is such an important trip to me -- I can't even begin to explain. I had gone there six years ago to tell the stories I hope to tell now," she said in a news release of her reasons for returning to Afghanistan. "When you go through something so traumatic, you're forever tied to that place and the people. I will never be able to stop thinking about the hope I saw in the eyes of the Afghan women and girls I met there." Fung will talk about putting closure to her personal tragedy and her passion for the country and its people. Breaking Bread is a gathering of people "sharing bread" with a common goal of donating funds to support education for Afghan women and girls. Doors open at 7 p.m., followed by Fung speaking at 7:30 p.m. -- refreshments will be served. Fung's book, Under an Afghan Sky, will also be for sale. Tickets cost $30, or $15 for students, and proceeds will go to the CW4WAfghan's Lantern Fund. Tickets can purchased at http:// goo.gl/62lZ3u. Yogis are welcome to take part in a day-long fundraising yoga festival at Coronation Park Saturday (Aug. 23). The Yoga Festival for Africa Yoga Yoga festival tomorrow at Coronation Park Project runs 10 a.m.-7 p.m. It will feature a variety of classes for all skill levels, as well as a barbecue, music and lots of positive vibes.
