Joel Hamilton said his four children have enjoyed the piece of sporting equipment at its present location for the last 10 years and sees no reason to move it now. "Is this being enforced at every single house in Oakville? If not why are they targeting us on this street," asked Hamilton. "Our kids use this thing for exercise, for family fun and enjoyment, for fun with their friends. In today's world where everyone is saying, `Our kids need more exercise. They need to get outside', wouldn't this be very counter to that?" When reached for comment, the Town's Manager of Design and Construction Paul Allen said the location of Hamilton's basketball net was brought to the Town's attention by complaints from another resident on Orsett Drive. Town staff also pointed out it is not asking Hamilton to take down his basketball net, but simply move it up his driveway a few feet so it is no longer on Town property. Hamilton said his property is sloped in such a way that having the basketball net anywhere else would not work. He argued he doesn't see what the problem is. "In the 10 years we've had the net, we have always ensured the safety of the neighbourhood by ensuring that the net was always out of the way of pedestrians using the sidewalk and kept in good working order," said Hamilton. "Also, my children have always been respectful when pedestrians walk past while they are playing and will stop and allow for the safe passing of the pedestrians. We have never had anyone speak to us about our basketball net or any concerns they may have had." Town staff said when a basketball net is that close to the road, the Town can have issues with re trucks, garbage trucks and school buses hitting them. They said the net could also pose a danger to pedestrians or vehicles, when heavy winds, or just the activity of using the net, knocks it over. see Multiple on p. 3 COME IN FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN SUNDAYS!
