' '· f The Oakville Cobras U-17 soccer team were honoured at the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) awards banquet. The OYSL is the most competitive level of play in Ontario. The Cobras overcame a slow start to finish second in this pres tigious league. Adding to this honour, the girls have also been ranked the number one team in Ontario. They are coming off a season in which they also won the Ontario Cup, the B.C. Kicks Tournament and were undefeated at the Iowa Showcase tour nament. The team is in Florida for the Orange Classic from Dec. 27-30. It's the most highly recruited soc cer tournament in the U.S. The Oakville C obras U-17 team. As recounted in Wednesday's edi tion, the Oakville Ice went into the Christmas Break with a much needed 7-1 win over Quebec Avalanche last Sunday. And the Ice will kick off the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) season in the New Year with a game against the Avalanche on Sunday, January 4, 2:50 p.m. at Ice Sports Oakville. Tammy Lee Shewchuk scored the first two goals in last Sunday's 7-1 win with single markers added by Nathalie Rivard, Kathy McCormack, Kristin King, Kira Misikowetz and Tasha Noble. Assists went to Therese Brisson (2), Misikowetz (2), Carly Haggard (2), Shewchuk, McCormack and Lesley Zimmer. Vanderjagt is third in NFL scoring behind Kansas City running back Priest Holmes at 150 and St. Louis kicker Jeff Wilkins at 155. Vanderjagt is also receiving growing amounts of publicity for his streak of successful field goals which is at 39. He is chasing the record of 40 set by cur rent Tennessee Titans kicker Gary Anderson which he set with Minnesota in 97/98. The Oakville Blades won't get too much rest over the Christmas Holidays as they are entered in the annual Newmarket Showcase Tournament, which is designed to attract college and OHL scouts. The Blades are in a tough spot in their own provincial jun ior A league schedule (in the midst of four games with Georgetown and Hamilton) and they get no reprieve at the tour nament as they kick things off this Saturday, Dec. 27,8:30 p.m. against the Texas Tornados, who are the defending champs. Oakville (24-10-2 in the west division) should have an eas ier day of it on Sunday, at least on paper, as they play Pickering (9-20-7 in the south division) at noon and divisional rival Buffalo Lightning (9-24-3-2) at 8 p.m. NEXT LEAGUE G A M ES... Against Guelph, Scott Wilson scored a pair with single markers to Tyler Shiplo, Nicholas Kashty and Brett Lee. Assists went to Braeden Corbeth, Ricky Bota, Andrew O'Brien, Wilson and defenceman Nathaniel Domagala. Christopher Miniaci was near perfect, including a timely early save which kept the game tied at 1-1. In Sunday's road win, Brandon Lane recorded the shutout. Oakville led 1-0 and 3-0 at the breaks. Ryan McGillivray scored a pair with single markers added by Eric Jackson and Dylan Cooper.
