The Oakville Rangers midget A A A rep team easily made it back to their fourth consecutive O M H A champi onship game on Sunday at River Oaks, but finally faced defeat. 5-2, by a Hamilton Bulldogs team which had their number this season. The final goal was into an empty net. "W e kept it going, (pressure), but we just couldn't capi talize and they did." said Oakville forward Josh Smyth, who notched a goal and was named Most Valuable Player. He also tipped his hat to Hamilton goalie Adrian Barber. Hamilton w ill now represent the O M H A at the allOntario midget championships. The Rangers had that hon our at both the previous bantam and peewee levels -- earning a silver medal on both occasions. The Oakville midget team included a mix of the above noted '86 birth year players as well as `85 birth year players. which had their own fine pedigree, coming just one series short last year of making the O M H A championship tournament. The `86 birth year players carry the torch on a tradition, stretching back nine years, that has never failed to earn an O M H A medal. With this year's silver medal, the haul now stands at five gold, three silver and a bronze medal. The combined `85/'86 team meshed well this season, earning first place with an impressive 23-4-5 regular sea son record and sweeping through their opening round play offs in three straight over Guelph Junior Storm. The only red Hag in the above record was with the Hamilton Bulldogs who despite a seemingly modest 1412-6 regular season record, were the only team to boast a winning record over the Oakville Rangers with two wins and a tie in four games. And then the two teams met in the second round of the O M H A playdowns.with Hamilton inexplicably extending their dominance, winning the series in three straight games (3-2, 3-2. 5-1). Oakville, luckily, had a bye into the O M H A champi onship tournament by virtue of being the hosts, as three time defending champs. In the O M H A championship tournament, Oakville reverted back to their winning ways, winning their first three games -- 4-3 over Halton, 5-3 over Markham and 20 over York Simcoe. But so did Hamilton, and even more impressively -- 30 over Halton, 6-3 over Markham and 6-1 over YorkSimcoe. The two teams then closed out the preliminary round portion of the championship tournament Saturday night, (S e e 'M idget AAA' page D3) Rangers players skate by as Hamilton whoops it up after Sunday's final.
