D2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 19, 2003 Aiming for the World Series An Oakville Little League elite all-star team is being put together with one clear goal. The World Series or bust. The team, comprised of play ers who will not have turned 17 before the middle of August, has been in the development stages since last fall, according to head coach Mel Swinton. "The nucleus of this club is comprised of players who have stood out for many years at the Little League level, and also players from the Oakville Minor Baseball Association (O M B A ) who played the last two seasons at the O BA midget rep level," said Swinton. who last year coached in the O M BA . "The core of this team won the Ontario Little League cham pionship in 2001 and made it to the championship game at the nationals. "Many on our club were also part of the O M B A club that advanced to the finals of the national level O BA district elim inations last August, the toughest district in Ontario." The club faces some chal lenging hurdles. The Little League provincial championships are scheduled to take place this July in Timmins. If the club is successful, they w ill advance to play at the Canadian Little League champi onships in Thunder Bay. The Canadian champion then will advance to the Little League senior all-star World Series in August in Maine. "W e've held tryouts and workouts since last September," said Swinton. "W e're still looking for more talent. You can never have enough pitching, and we need some depth, for sure. " But we have an excellent core already --players with talent and. as importantly, a great work ethic, including Anthony Amone, Russell Gilroy, Jesse Chiasson and Chris Langlois. " I've coached Trevor Jones and Brad Leeming in the past and they will be huge contribu tors this season again. "Defence w ill be a key, but Chiasson's a top catcher and our pitching should be solid with Jones, Amone and G ilroy already established with lots of experience." The club is in the midst of a major sponsorship drive, to help defray the heavy costs associated with travel and tournament expenses. Assistant coach Rich Stokes says sponsor support can make or break the club's chances of getting to Maine. "To compete at the provincial and national level successfully, we will have to get into as many tournaments as possible in May, June and early July," said Stokes. "If we can raise enough funds to give these kids the opportunity to play a lot, I believe we have a tremendous opportunity to repre sent Oakville - and Canada - at the World Series in Maine this August." A rarity, none of the club's three coaches, Swinton. Stokes or Ian Caims has any children on the ball club. The commitment of the coaches is obviously essential, and they expect the same com mitment from their players. "This is going to be a real challenge. And we are still look ing for talent." reiterated Swinton. Any local businesses who would like to help sponsor the team, are asked to contact head coach Mel Swinton at (905) 2570655. New entry level program closing out inaugural year Oakville's five and six year old aspiring hockey players have received a unique intro duction to the game this season. Labeled the Initiation Program, it marked a radical departure from the previous way Oakville players had been introduced to the game. After due research, the M inor Oaks Hockey Association (M O H A ) came up with a program of 'cross-ice' hockey, dividing River Oaks B into three rinks, with portable boards from a Guelph supplier, and with excellent support from parents and arena personnel who helped put up and take down the boards at each ses sion. Enlisting the support of 18 parent instructors (from all walks of life), and adapting the O M H A 's C H IP program, the Initiation Program was born. Each player was evaluated on the five disciplines, and accordingly divided into six teams of 12 players each, in red. white and blue categories. The parent instructors dili gently followed the C H IP pro gram throughout the year. They were well prepared, and provid ed a fun environment for the players. "There are a lot of future coaches in the group of 18." said co-ordinator John Butler, with Lou Cucoch echoing his remarks. The main thought behind the whole program was that the I f Entry level hockey players play in a recent `cross-ice' game. players could proceed through the season, working with play ers of equal ability, that would make them better skaters, better passers, better shooters, and at the same time accumulate more time on the ice, and most importantly work up a sweat doing it. They've been at it all winter, and now move on to the gradu ation 'exercises' this weekend which includes: * a skills testing session (all players) by the Toronto Maple Leafs Skill squad; · a championship game on full-ice, with three minute shifts-running time (the players are chomping at the bit); · and then on to Tim Hortons, the program sponsor, for hot chocolate and dough nuts. and their graduation diplo mas. This all takes place on Saturday, March 22 with the skills session at River Oaks A and on Sunday. March 23 with the championship games at River Oaks B. It also marks the start of championship week for alj of the M O H A house leagues.
