Ecology and Human Rights. The initiative resulted in about 90 people on hand for the vigil, with some passers-by on Lakeshore Road joining the event. Attendees had extra candles which were freely passed out among the newcomers. In addition to music and song, a handful of people stood at the centre of the circle and spoke their mind about war and peace, including an Irishman who grew up experiencing violence upclose. Williams completes St. Pat's walk Friends greet him at The Bearded Collie for walk number 27 By Paula Henriques OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF With only a blister on his left foot and sore limbs. Ed William s walked into The Bearded Collie pub tri umphant. another walk completed. The " walking leprechaun," as his friends like to call him. was dressed in green attire from head to foot, had com pleted his twenty-seventh successful St. Patrick's Day walk from Toronto to Oakville. And it took him under seven hours. Walking stick in hand, he walked into the pub at 4 p.m. to congratulatory hugs. " Oh. I'm tired." said Williams. " The weather was too warm. I would prefer it to be as cold as could get." To be prepared for any unpre dictable weather. Williams, had to dress in layers, which added to the heat. Underneath his green get-up he wore a jacket, button-down shirt and T-shirt. "You don't know how cold it w ill be when you first start," said the 51 -yearold. With slow steps he approached a table and ordered two large orange juices. His thighs were tensing up from the 40-km. walk. But he said he took the week off from work to rest. " I 'll be sore for a few days, but I don't feel any worse than in past years," he said. "There's two good things about the walk - it's one way, and it's once a year." Though there are usually one or two brave souls who walk alongside Williams, this year he walked alone. But he said there were people along the path that waited for him as well as honks and waves coming from cars. " There is this guy who waits in Mimico for me every year and he told me I was right on time," he said. William s said his only struggle dur ing the walk was the puddles. He had to dodge them by climbing snowbanks or getting to them before the cars did so he wouldn't get splashed. " Us meeting him is as much tradi tion as he is to the walk," said Parkin, who has met him at the end of his trek for 27 years. " I think it's great that he does this walk. He's kept up the tradition. And we don't see each other often during the rest of the year, but we always do on St. Patrick's Day," said Bilbija. His childhood friend Peter Languay said William s tries to get him to walk with him every year, but " I have a hard enough time trying to get out of bed."
