The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 19, 2003 - A 5 Halton MPP defends provincial TV budget By Jason Misner SPECIAL T O TH E BEAVER Halton M PP Ted Chudleigh says he doesn't think it will matter to the public where a provincial budget is released as long as it gets the details. "The media w ill cover it and report it to the people of Ontario and that's where the com munication w ill take place." said Chudleigh. who's parliamentary assistant to Ontario Finance Minister Janet Ecker. Ecker w ill present her budget March 27 via satellite television and across the Internet at a yet-to-be-determined gathering, instead of in the Legislature. The Legislature was supposed to begin its spring session yesterday, but instead w ill reconvene April 30 with a Throne Speech that will lay out the government's policy plans. M PPs haven't met since Dec. 13. Chudleigh said no location has yet been chosen to deliver the budget, but noted Ecker's riding is Oshawa and Eves' is Orangeville. Chudleigh said he'll put in a request to have the budget released in Milton. Halton MPP The budget Ted Chudleigh announcement, according to Chudleigh's office, is estimated to cost about 5100.000. Ancaster-Dundas-Flambo rough-Aldershot M PP Ted McMeekin said the government has taken away the right for M PPs to speak to the budget when it's first made public in a formal ized and democratic session. " I think it's nothing short of absolutely bizarre." McMeekin, Halton Region's only official Liberal Opposition representative. He said Eves is hypocritical by not divulging his budget in the Legislature. McMeekin said the government touted itself as being accountable when it was first elected in 1995 and should follow through on those ideals by holding a budget in a forum where it can receive fair comment. Chudleigh said given the Throne Speech w ill be held at the end of April, the earliest he could see an election called is for May 29. The government must give 28 days notice prior to election day. and provincial rules stip ulate Ontario elections must be held on a Thursday. Originally, Chudleigh thought an election could be held as early as May 8. Custom D esigns. Custom Finishes. Top Quality Cabinetry. Free In-Home Service. "I'm going to do what's right." Eves announced last week he will deliver the budget to a yet-to-be-determined gathering on March 27. a full month before the Legislature resumes sit ting on April 30. Opposition MPPs immediately cried foul following the Premier's announce ment and called on Carr to launch an investigation immediately into the matter, The investigation began last Friday and while there's no time-line for its com pletion. Carr said it will be done before the Legislature sits. " We're going to go over all of our work to make sure we don't miss any thing." he said. " We will be very thor ough." Carr, who said he has received phone calls from three provincial speakers sup porting him, didn't mince words about the way his government has been conducting itself. The budget announcement, he said, is indicative of a government clamoring for much-needed votes and clearly not think ing of democracy by unveiling it outside the halls of Queen's Park. Eves is letting a bunch of political strategists rule the Queen's Park roost. Carr said, and he's disappointed. The Premier has let this happen. "This Premier has put getting re-elected ahead of his principles, and I think that's wrong." said Carr.
