C2 - The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday April 2, 2003 Emergency CPR saves man's life Heart and Stroke Foundation holds CPR Blitz on Saturday By Monika Rejnowicz S P E C IA L T O T H E B EA V ER It is quite extraordinary how a few seconds can save a person's life. But it happens every day. Each year in Canada, about 22.000 people die from heart attacks. Half occur before the person reaches the hos pital. That is why everyone should learn CPR - cardiopulmonary resuscitation. By knowing how to recognize and respond to a cardiac emergency, a per son's odds of survival and recovery increase bymore than 30 per cent. This is exactly what happened to Harry Laurenssen. a very active and healthy 74-year-old who collapsed at a local community dance. That day was like any other. He enjoyed the outdoors and often volun teered his time in taking young children on tractor rides. He maintained a healthy life style and did not feel ill getting ready for the dance that evening. While at the dance, Laurenssen sud denly collapsed having no pulse and turning blue in colour. Luckily two women, Gail MacKenzie and Luba Roechner, took notice and knew how to perform CPR, a life saving technique. MacKenzie instructed a friend to call 911 and performed mouth-to-mouth while Roechner administered chest compressions. As fate had it, both MacKenzie, a CPR instructor, and Roechner were nurses. MacKenzie had all the neces sary equipment in her car, but obviously, since every second counts, had to do without it. Both women relied on basic CPR. W ithin seven minutes, the fire department arrived with an auto defibril lator. It took one shock to resuscitate Laurenssen. Immediate contact with emergency services and early CPR helped save this man's life. For this, among many other reasons, more than 1.6 million Canadians each year take this information to heart and enroll in cither a CPR or First Aid course. Each year the numbers in Oakville increase. Last year more than 170 indi viduals attended the annual Oakville CPR Blitz. The Oakville CPR Blitz is a fourhour course led by certified CPR instructors. CPR and working in accordance with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Blitz is a fun opportunity for participants to obtain their basic Heart Saver Certificate with fellow members of the community. Since volunteer certified CPR instructors are conducting the CPR Blitz, the cost remains minimal. This year's CPR Blitz is on Saturday April 5, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Halton Region Auditorium at 1151 Bronte Rd. The cost is $15 per person and any one over the age of 12 may attend.
