They collected crayons, glue sticks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, note pads and erasers. In addition. JKCS donated $1,200 of the proceeds from its annual chocolate bar fund raising event. As part of their con tributions, the Grade 6 class held a bake sale and raised $155 to purchase Bibles for the school. Due to lack of proper health care, poor sanitary conditions and a polluted water supply, the life expectancy of the people living in the Mojarra area is less than 50 years. Sixty per cent live in poverty, eking out a living working in the cane fields. The Pena de Horeb Christian School is the only education available in the area for children up to Grade 5. The school started in the local one room church and gives families and children hope for the future, and respite from their suffering. The Cook family, who are affiliated with John Knox Christian School, deliv ered the supplies to the Dominican Republic during their recent March Break trip. They went with a group of families from Canada to help build a school in a small community near Santa Domingo. Dean Broersma, who coordinates the building of new schools, picked up the supplies from the Cook family and deliv ered them to the Pena de Horeb Christian School. Karen Cook recalls being shocked at the deplorable, living conditions that many must endure, families living in a barrio often have only temporary shelters, litde food and limited or no access to med ical supplies. As a result, the infant mortal ity rate is very high. JKCS sincerely thank all those families who participated and helped make this project possible. CLIP & SAVE!
